Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. VERY GOOD+ No marks in text. Previous owner's name in pencil on front end paper. Appears unread. xxxiv, 234 pages ; 23 cm. . . . . . FROM THE BACK COVER: "In the early nineteenth century, the American Colonization Society was formed for the purpose of encouraging emigration of free blacks to Africa. While intent on ridding the United States of what they saw as a dangerous black population, the association also attracted some liberals who viewed its goals as an incentive toward emancipation." "Attitudes among African Americans toward colonization were varied, viewed by some as an opportunity to start new lives in a free country and by others as a deceptive scheme of the white man. But when the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 put the freedom of every person of African descent in jeopardy, many began to consider emigration their only option.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Signed and Inscribed by author. VERY GOOD+ No marks in text. Previous owners name on half title page. Gently read if at all. Binding is tight and square. xiii, 282 pages ; 23 cm. . . . . . . . The 1993 revised edition deepens Wilson J. Moses?s examination of black messianism as a powerful religious and political myth in African American history and culture. Moving across roughly 150 years of Afro-American history, Moses analyzes how the intertwined images of the ?avenging messiah? and the *suffering servant* shape interpretations of figures ranging from Benjamin Banneker and Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom to Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. Du Bois, Ralph Ellison, Joe Louis, and Malcolm X. Drawing on the myth-and-symbol approach associated with Henry Nash Smith?s Virgin Land, he argues that black messianic myths never disappear but continually regenerate, and he concludes that older American traditions of evangelical reform, perfectionism, and the social gospel offer more promise than contemporary currents of what he calls *narcissistic anarchism.* Wilson Jeremiah Moses (1942-2024) was an American historian of African American intellectual history and black nationalism who taught at institutions including the University of Iowa, Southern Methodist University, Brown University, and Boston University, before becoming Walter L. Ferree Professor of American History at Pennsylvania State University. A Detroit native, he earned his Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown and went on to publish influential works such as The Golden Age of Black Nationalism, 1850-1925 and The Wings of Ethiopia, establishing himself as a leading interpreter of black nationalist thought, religious myth, and African American political leadership. Inscribed by Author(s).…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Afrocentrism and its history has long been disputed and controversial. In this important book, Wilson Moses presents a critical and nuanced view of the issues. Tracing the origins of Afrocentrism since the eighteenth century, he examines the combination of various popular mythologies, some of them mystical and sentimental, others perfectly reasonable. This is a rich history of black intellectual life and the concept of race.…
