Made up of 24 leaves (20.5x32cm) dissected and mounted on linen in panels that open into a map that is roughly 123x130cm. Housed in hardcover boards. The boards are a little rubbed but remain strong and sturdy. There is an ink heading handwritten onto the front-end page. The map itself is tanned and foxed with age but whole and attractive. JK. Monumentale, sehr dekorative Wandkarte von Transvaal, vollständig, wie hier angeboten, sehr selten; gleichzeitig die letzte und genaueste vor Ausbruch des Burenkriegs veröffentlichte Karte. Als Nebenkarten integriert sind zwei große Stadtpläne von Johannesburg und Pretoria (Kartenblatt Nr. 1). Autor der Karte ist der Rostocker Friedrich Jeppe (1834-1898), der 1861 nach Südafrika ausgewandert war. Er machte dort rasch Karriere und schon 1866 übertrug man ihm das Amt des General Postmaster, das er mit Umsicht und Erfolg bis 1875 ausübte. Schon während dieser Zeit begann er mit der kartographischen Erfassung Transvaals und gilt als bedeutendster Kartograph der Region seiner Zeit. - Sehr gut erhaltene Karten in sauberem, farbkräftigen Druck auf fast wie Seide wirkendem Leinen. Am unbedruckten Ober- und Unterrand sind die Karten etwas, teils auch etwas stärker stockfleckig und die Faltstellen sind gelegentlich leicht gebräunt. An den Stoffkanten haben sich einzelne Fädchen gelöst, ansonsten ist das Leinen völlig intakt. - Complete set of the six sheets of this rare monumental wall map of Transvaal, finely printed on glazed linen. The maps are kept in its original cardboard wallet. This is worn and shows some overall browning. The maps are in very good condition. The upper and lower white margins of the sheets show some foxing and there is some minor browning to some of the folds. Some few threads are loosening from the top and lower edges of the fabric. Apart from that the fabric is intact and clean.…
