Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Octavo. 219pp. Frontispiece portrait and inserted plates. Maroon cloth gilt. Front hinge neatly restored, puncture hole in front gutter, very good. Inscribed: "From the Author to the Hawaiian Board of Missions. 99 Nassau Street, New York City, June 16th, 1898." One of the first accou…nts of life in America by any Japanese-born traveler. Oyabe was a missionary to the Ainu people in Japan and, inspired by American missionaries, he decided to travel in the U.S. where he was, not unpredictably, discriminated against. He went on to study as a "special student" at two traditionally black schools: Hampton Institute and Howard University, where he got his D.D. degree, and finally went on to study at the Yale Divinity School, where he gives an account of playing the newly invented game of basketball. He then went on to do missionary work in Hawaii, and eventually returned to Japan, where he did further missionary work, and wrote on Japanese nationalist subjects. An uncommon and important book, seldom found signed.
