Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. In accordance with federal statutes enacted in 1910 and 1913, the Law and, subsequently, the Probate Divisions of the Bureau of Indian Affairs were responsible for determining the heirs of deceased Indian trust allottees. Ultimately, Native Americans submitted more than 2,500 pages of wills and probate records to the Bureau. These records span the period 1911 to 1921 and, with a few exceptions, pertain to Indian families living in the Plains and several western states. Researchers will find members of the following tribes represented in this collection: Chippewa, Sioux, Apache, Shawnee, Quapaw, Assinboin, Leach Lake Chippewa, Confederated Flathead, Ponca, Cheyenne, Crow, Sac & Fox, Nez Perce, Southern Ute, Omaha, Osage, and more. The work at hand represents the first volume in a new series of Native American sources compiled by Mr. Jeff Bowen. The author, who was responsible for having the National Archives microfilm the collection, has transcribed about 180 manuscript pages consisting of 96 verbatim wills for this volume. As a rule, the documents identify the names of the testator, residence, heirs, a description of any real estate transferred in the will, names of executors and witnesses, and other particulars commonly found in probate records. In all, genealogists will find references to about 2,000 individuals in these documents, every one of whom is referenced in the complete name index at the back. 208p, softcover, 2005.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Texas Cherokees, 1820 - 1839, with A document for Litigation, 1921, submitted by George W. Fields, Lawyer, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Even though the Trail of Tears was approximately seventeen years away, the Eastern Cherokee were feeling the pressure of white settlers and an American government wanting them out of their way in the east. A large following of Cherokee led by Chief Richard Fields and Chief Bowles migrated to Texas in 1819 after a short stopover in Arkansas. The Cherokee eventually established a settlement near present-day Nacogdoches, Texas. The Cherokee first petitioned the Spanish government for permanent residence and then following their war for independence the newly minted Mexican government. Similarly they'd eventually make the same request with the independent Republic of Texas and then again with the State of Texas. [J-B1421] Jeff Bowen. Paperback, 2018, Illustrations (27), Index, 128 pp.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. Volume II; Applications 3001-6775 from the U.s. Court of Claims, 1906-1910. Cherokee-related Records of Special Commissioner Guion Miller The Eastern Cherokee by Blood series Volumes I - XIII is the most complete series in pure transcribed form (from National Archival film, M-1104) of the Cherokee abstracts available and beyond, nothing added, nothing taken away. From the first application to the last (45,857) representing approximately 90,000 individuals and then in Volume XIII The Exceptions Filed to Guion Miller's Report of May 28, 1909, and submitted on January 5, 1910. The complete record of application decisions gives both those accepted and rejected. There are thousands of names and families involved in this finished series. Let it be known that if there are rejections it may not mean the applicant is not Cherokee, only due to the fact that they may not have been related to an Emigrant Cherokee during the time of removal. Their ancestor could have belonged to a different tribe or have been an Old Settler Cherokee, a Western-born Cherokee, or possibly even a Texas-born Cherokee that had family that left the east as early as 1818-1820. The Miller Application numbers are totally different than a regular roll number, which contains an index of names that may lead to a person's family tribal enrollment card through that number. The enrollment card also has vital information such as name, family relations, age, sex, blood quantum, etc. But the Miller Applications can lead you to generations of family information and history along with, in many cases, testimony not just from family but neighbors, tribal members and acquaintances. The books not only can lead you to Cherokee blood as a descendant of an Emigrant Cherokee but also to thousands of other Cherokee bloodlines as well as possibly relations to other tribes during testimony. So these materials are a researcher's dream come true. 2006, 267pp, Index.

It is believed that the Blackfeet people abandoned the Great Lakes region for the West more than 300 years ago, probably in reaction to the arrival of Europeans. Once on the Plains, they rid themselves of their woodland habits and adopted the nomadic life. Index, viii + 156 pp.[9845-C].

Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. This is a transcription of the first two years (1915-1916) of a census of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians taken by James E. Henderson, Indian Agent representing the U.S. government for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The entire census covers the eight years between 1915 and 1922 and is based on a microfilm copy of a typescript originally on file at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This present transcription, prepared by Mr. Jeff Bowen, is scheduled to be published in four volumes (two census years per volume) and marks the first time this material has been made available as a publication. The census itself concerns the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from Cherokee, North Carolina, living on the reservation known as the Qualla Boundary. Individuals enumerated in the census are descendants of the Cherokees who were not removed to Indian Territory during the period 1838-1839 in the migration known as the Trail of Tears. While there is sometimes additional data, information provided in the census almost invariably gives the individual's name, family relationship, date of birth, and sex--information that is critical in any genealogical research. In some cases, the Indian Agent also compiled Cherokee birth and death dates or the names of children living apart from their parents. [NS-2045].

Henderson, Indian Agent representing the U.S. government for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The entire census covers the eight years between 1915 and 1922 and is based on a microfilm copy of a typescript originally on file at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Mr. Jeff Bowen, who transcribed the first two volumes in this purported four-volume work in 2004 (Volume I, 1915-1916; and Volume II, 1917-1918), now returns with Volume III. This series marks the first time the Eastern Cherokee data has been made available as a publication. As with the previous two volumes, Volume III concerns the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from Cherokee, North Carolina, living on the reservation known as the Qualla Boundary. Individuals enumerated in the census are descendants of the Cherokees who were not removed to Indian Territory during the period 1838 to 1839 in the migration known as the Trail of Tears. These transcriptions were taken from National Archival film M-595, Roll 644, Indian Census Rolls 1933 (Navajo, Hopi and Paiute Indians), with Birth and Death Rolls, 1925-1933 . The book begins with an explanation of how to read the census and use the key at the top of each page. The original 1933 census data was arranged in columns with categories at the top of each column; however, in this transcription semicolons are used instead of columns to save space. The 1933 census provides the following information on each census number, surname, given name, sex, year of birth, age at last birthday, tribe, degree of blood (F=full, 1/2=half), marital status, relationship to head of family, whether at jurisdiction where enrolled (yes/no), whether a ward, and allotment annuity and/or identification number. The census starts with the Navajo, the largest of the three tribes, then the Hopi, and lastly the Paiute. All persons enumerated in the census are numbered consecutively, despite the change in tribal affiliation. Readers should check the table of contents for each census division or location. Each tribal census is in alphabetical order but in a few instances a name has been inserted that disrupts the sequence, necessitating a limited index at the back of the book. The birth records transcribed for this book were originally published by the author in a separate 1996 publication. Their inclusion here completes the transcription of M-595, Roll 644 and affords researchers the opportunity to examine its contents in one place. The birth records cover many of the same criteria as the census. In all cases the author has been careful to copy the names and dates exactly as indicated on these microfilm records. He hopes that these pages will be of value to individuals seeking their Navaho, Hopi, or Paiute heritage.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. Sac & Fox - Shawnee Estates 1885-1910 (Under Sac & Fox agency) Volume III. The history of the Shawnee is fascinating. Naturally the most famous Shawnee known would be Tecumseh, born circa 1768. But this series contains the descendants of Tecumseh and many famous chiefs and warriors along with their families. It starts with some fascinating materials covering not just the Shawnee but the Sac and Fox Nations. The first volumes concern the estates of these tribal members along with a mixture of other tribes within the Sac and Fox Agencies jurisdiction: Tribes such as the Absentee Shawnee, the Potawatomie, Winnebago, Mexican Kickapoo, Iowa, Otoe, and Pawnee, to name a few. These volumes will cover a multitude of classifications as they progress. You will first of all in early volumes find estates, beginning in 1885 and follow through with genealogical source materials for families that have only wished they had years ago. You will find long sought after questions answered through Births, Deaths, Adoptions, and Guardianships. There will also be other records with Wills, Cemetery Records, Vital Statistics, Marriage, and Divorces later within this series. These materials are carefully transcribed from original documents that were rescued from a loft with a leaky roof. They were close to being lost forever from water damage. These logbooks and documents were boxed and stored in an attic where they kept vegetables in a building owned by the Sac and Fox Indian Agency. These books cover a range of time from 1885-1924. There are numerous Indian agencies from various states as well as many old bankers and their organizations in many of these documents. You will find many old time lawyers and their firms' names as well as a great deal of mention of different professions from the day. Each book will be approximately 340 pages including an index. This series won't be your average genealogical census or typed payroll records with miscellaneous tribal expenditures. So far it is providing interesting reading and a great deal of Native history while making you understand what your ancestors lived through in another era, creating your future. The majority of Volume III in this series continues with the transcriptions of estates containing family members involved, their legal representatives, and ancillary parties covering the period 1867-1910. There are approximately 1,908 individuals documented. Sources will be found giving estate locations, property values, fees, divisions of property, (land, structures, furniture, personal belongings, monies, etc.) per family member in many cases. Anyone examining these documents will find numerous family names, ages, relationship, sometimes death dates, along with any number of circumstances surrounding the estate. In addition to the Sac & Fox and Shawnee Tribes, additional tribes mentioned in this Volume are the Iowa, Kickapoo, Mexican Kickapoo, and Pawnee Tribes. These volumes were transcribed from Oklahoma Historical Society film rolls SFSA-50 to 53. Jeff Bowen. Paperback, 2018, Index, 338 pp. NS2132.
