Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. In-12, [2], XXIII, 116, [4] pp. Contemporary calf with triple gilt fillet borders to both boards, flat spine gilt, black morocco lettering-piece (binding slightly rubbed at joints and extremities, some toning and occasional minor spotting to the text). First and only edition of this scarce catalogue of the manuscript holdings of the metropolitan church of Rouen, compiled by Jean Saas, canon of the chapter and member of the Académie des Sciences of Rouen. The work opens with a substantial and learned preface that serves as a concise essay on the history of libraries and bibliophily, addressing the value of printed catalogues, recounting the history of the Rouen chapter library from its destruction during the French Wars of Religion, notably the sack by Calvinist forces in 1562, through its reconstruction in the seventeenth century, and celebrating the Norman literary tradition with references to figures such as Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle and Pierre Corneille. The catalogue includes 17 manuscripts, each described with notes on content and provenance. The volume further includes a Liste chronologique des bienfaiteurs de la Bibliothèque, recording donors and their contributions and a section of Pièces justificatives, in which the author justifies the inclusion of documentary extracts. A good copy of rare production of Norman ecclesiastical scholarship, apparently unrecorded in the major sale records.
