wrappers. Zustand: near fine. no dj as issued. 1st. edition. Ambroise Vollard, 1923, [2], 126, [8] pp. Extraordinary and delirious illustration by Jean Puy, including 8 original etchings and 1 original lithograph. 100 drawings in black in-text or full-page, one on the cover. 15x11" (38.3x28 cm), self-wrappers with printed French…-fold jacket, with additional plain paper jacket. No. 61, one of 315 standard copies on Vélin D'Arches (nos. 61-375) from a total edition limited to 375 copies. -- Unlike Ubu a l'Hôpital, Le Pèee Ubu a la Guerre (mini-trade) and Les Sources d'Ubu which were published without limitation, this book was published in a limited edition. The whole series published by Ambroise Vollard, the noted Parisian art dealer and publisher, constitute an important document from early twentieth century French literature featuring the unforgettable, vulgar character, Ubu, created by Vollard's friend Alfred Jarry in his play Ubu Roi and first performed (only one performance) in 1896. In the wake of World War I, Vollard adopted Ubu in a series of short books that mock the absurdity of war. Chips and tears to plain paper jacket including a long split at bottom spine fold; bump at heel of printed jacket with a few slight punctures at spine and some chipping at spine ends; only hints of wear within; about near fine overall. Jean Puy (illustrator).
