Première édition française de 'Distinction of Ranks in Society' (1771), traduite par Jean-Baptiste Suard. Cet ouvrage majeur de John Millar, disciple et protégé d'Adam Smith au sein de l'école écossaise, ne fut réédité en français qu'une seule fois (1778). Une partie du tirage de cette même édition de 1773 parut sous une page de titre différente : 'Observations sur la distinction des rangs de la société'. Avocat et professeur de droit à Glasgow, Millar acquit une grande notoriété par son enseignement et ses écrits. Dans ce texte fondateur, l'auteur étudie la genèse des hiérarchies sociales, de la famille, des rôles de genre et de l'esclavage à travers une perspective évolutionniste novatrice. Il y développe la thèse que les lois fondamentales qui gouvernent les sociétés trouvent leur origine dans des facteurs économiques, anticipant ainsi certaines analyses du matérialisme historique prémarxiste D'importantes pages plaident pour l'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes, pour l'abolition de l'esclavage, ou la nécessité d'améliorer les conditions de travail des plus défavorisés. Millar se prononce également en faveur de l'indépendance américaine et d'une large démocratisation du système politique français. Selon Jean Mondot ("Diderot-Raynal et les Lumières écossaises", in 'Lumières', 2004, n°3, p. 57), "ce livre constitue la référence principale d'après laquelle Diderot-Raynal composeront leur histoire de l'esclavage".
