Hardcover/Hardback. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. Préface de M. J.-A. Brutails. 1912 First Edition. In 8vo. Pp. [2] f.r., [1] wrapper, [4], VI, [1], 186, [1] wrapper, [2] r.e. Bordeaux. Marcel Mounastre-Picamilh. 20th-century half morocco over marbled boards, the spine with five raised bands, gilt-ruled and lettered; some rubbing at the edges. Original printed wrappers preserved (lightly toned), the front showing a woodcut vignette of a monk with a wine barrel. Presentation inscription, without the recipient's name, on the leaf between the original front wrapper and the half-title, signed by Barennes and dated 7 November 1912. The limitation leaf is numbered 5 in manuscript and signed by the publisher, Mounastre-Picamilh. Very little foxing. Fine. First edition of Jean Barennes's study of medieval viticulture and winemaking in the Bordelais as newly attached archiviste-paléographe to the Gironde's own departmental archives. For the occasion, he gathered the result from a seven-part serialization in the Revue historique de Bordeaux et du département de la Gironde into this standalone edition, crowned by the Société d'Agriculture de la Gironde and prefaced by long-serving Gironde archivist J.-A. Brutails. This copy is signed as one of only fifteen printed on papier à bras from an edition of 315, numbered 5 and signed by the publisher, Marcel Mounastre-Picamilh, on the limitation leaf. It carries a second relevant mark beyond the publisher's own: on a separate leaf, Barennes has added his own autograph presentation inscription, dated 7 November 1912. That date falls in the same year Barennes married into the family of Édouard Bardinet and left the Gironde archives for good, taking up the administration of the family's Bordeaux rum and spirits house, a post he held until his death in 1934. Ref. Labadie, 957; Revue historique de Bordeaux et du département de la Gironde (3. 1912), p. 213 (contemporary bibliographical record of the original seven-part serialization, 1911-1912). On Barenne's life: "Fonrouge, C., Le recours à un mandataire quasi externe: Jean Barennes etc., (2010) halshs-00465894, pp. 8-9. Six chapters follow Bordeaux wine from vineyard to cellar: the vine-growing districts of the Bordelais; the fragmentation and leasing of vineyard holdings; grape varieties and the year's vineyard work; the harvest; and the practical business of vinification, cellars, vats, pressing, and the different qualities of wine that resulted. Barennes opens his chapter on vinification by admitting plainly that the documentary record for actual winemaking technique is thin, arguing that the sources' silence on procedures such as fining suggests that cellar practice remained comparatively rudimentary. A final chapter follows the storage and transport of wine in casks, pipes, and barriques, and the coopers who made them. A documentary appendix, Documents concernant la viticulture en Bordelais au Moyen Age (Documents concerning viticulture in the Bordelais during the Middle Ages), reproduces primary texts in Latin, Gascon, and French. Among them are a notarial release dated by the reign of Edward, eldest son of Edward III of England, as Prince of Aquitaine, and a Bénédiction de la Vigne (Blessing of the Vine), a liturgical blessing transcribed from a Bordeaux diocesan ritual that itself records an older exemplar. A preface by J.-A. Brutails, archivist of the Gironde departmental archives, opens the book, followed by an extensive bibliography and list of manuscript sources drawing on the Archives départementales de la Gironde, several Médoc château archives, the Archives Nationales, and the Bibliothèque Nationale. Seven years of medieval Bordeaux wine pulled from the archives, then a sudden change of career: in 1912 Barennes left scholarship to join his father-in-law's spirits business. Our copy is one of only fifteen on special paper, inscribed by Barennes that November, signed just as the historian of the old wine trade stepped into the modern one. signed and inscribed by author or artist. …
