Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: Preface. 1. Backdrop: political and cultural. 2. Aktha: The Rishipattana. 3. Sarnath: The Mrigadaya. 4. Donors and donations. 5. Sculpturing workshops and the Sarnath school of art. 6. The intangible boundaries drawn by the Jatakas. 7. The buddhist landscape of Varanasi: origin, growth and shrinkage. Bibliography. Index. Lord Buddha came to Sarnath, where he delivered his First Sermon, and paved a stable foundation for Buddhism. The place of the First Sermon, the Mrigadaya of Buddhist scriptures, obviously became the most holy place, and a famous Buddhist pilgrimage. As a result, a large Buddhist landscape came up with Mrigadaya (Sarnath) at the centre. The western side of it was occupied by the learned and wise immigrants, the residents of Rishipattana. There are a number of unanswered questions related to the Buddhist landscape of Varanasi, e.g. why did the Lord choose to deliver his First Sermon at Sarnath? Also, when Varanasi was the famous city, why was periphery selected by him? The nature and successive growth of the landscape created around the place of First Sermon also is obscure. The old and recent archaeological investigations carried out in the vicinity of Sarnath have brought to light evidence which provide answers to some of the above questions, and also outline the chronology and growth of this Buddhist landscape. The present volume is aimed at reaching a larger section of the society, which is interested in Buddhism and Buddhist sites. Although archaeological and other scientific data has been utilised, technical jargon has been avoided. The work is also aimed to promote such specialised attempts in the historical studies, when interpretation of archaeological findings of a holy place is envisaged in its geo-cultural totality.

The cultural history of Varanasi, one of the oldest inhabited cities of the world, is woven with a multi-layered composition of myths and folklores. Each important locality of the city has some mythology in its background, which seems to convey a significant happening of the past. Myths have deep roots in our society. Thus, their study is a promising line, capable of revealing the roots of our civilization. The study of the history of Varanasi without mythology, therefore, remains incomplete. The theme of this book, which is a fresh addition to the series, New Discoveries in the History of Varanasi, extends beyond the recording of archaeological findings at Shooltankeshwar and Avimukta-kshetra (Kashi-Vishwanath area). Having a special place in the Shaiva mythology of Varanasi, the material findings of these sites add much to the socio-religious history of the place when scrutinized along with folk-religious traditions. This volume also demonstrates the utility of conjoining the results of scientific analyses of tangible and intangible facets of a multi-layered cultural centre like Varanasi. The book embodies the details of the findings from the excavations at Shooltankeshwar and Saraswati Udyan. These sites form a part of the long drawn archaeological project to study the history of Varanasi. Incidentally, the twin sites of Saraswati Udyan and Shooltankeshwar also represent the nucleus and periphery of the Shaiva landscape of Kashi. The modern Kashi-Vishwanath temple (Pukka Mahal), in the heart of the city, falls within the Avimukta-kshetra, which according to mythology was the abode of Shiva and his consort Parvati. Although at a distance from Pukka Mahal, Shooltankeshwar is reputed in mythology for witnessing the event when Shiva held the river Ganga on his trident before she was to enter into the city. Archaeological findings from these two sites are also significant for scientific evaluation of the antiquity and genesis of such myths. In combination with the other excavated sites of Varanasi, these two sites outline the lateral as well as linear historical growth of the settlement pattern of Kashi-kshetra. This book, besides providing authentic data to archaeologists, is also useful for art historians as some of the classic lithic compositions recovered in archaeological context at Saraswati Udyan are documented here. The tales of Ganga-avatarna (descent of Ganga) and Avimukteshwar (the resort of Shiva-Parvati) have been evaluated in the light of archaeological findings. The inferences, thus drawn, are significant for the scholars involved in the study of Indian historical and cultural studies.

The Ganga plain has been the cradle of Indian civilization right from the ancient times. This is well attested by the archaeological findings of a number of city and village sites of the early historical times. The region also witnessed formation of early states and urban centres. According to ancient texts, Kashi was an important Janpada, with Varanasi as its capital. On account of antiquity and continuity, it is also claimed to be one of the oldest living cities of the world. The expertise in tangible skills in technologies, arts and crafts, and spiritual attainments reflected in ideologies and institutions, have placed Varanasi at the forefront of the cultural centres of the country. The answers to many questions related to the early history of the city lie buried under its fertile plains. The recent archaeological excavations at Rajghat were aimed to estimate the dates as well as the stages of the growth of Varanasi. The findings reported in the present book have brought to light many hidden aspects of this city, which evidence origin and proficiency in a number of crafts like pottery making, ivory carving, and technologies such as glass, copper, iron, lapidary and gold smithy. The growth of Varanasi from rural to flourishing trade city, which happened during the 1st millennium BCE to the early centuries of the Common Era, was the result of a continuous historical process of development. The book not only brings to light several important findings, but also adds significantly to the history of cities of the Early Historical period in the Ganga plain.

Varanasi is not only one of the oldest living cities of the world but is also a model reflecting a comprehensive picture of our rich cultural heritage. The undisrupted occupation of Kashi region since ancient times till this date played a vital role in the make up of modern Varanasi. The unique qualities of this settlement raise a number of questions like how old is Varanasi. What are the factors which helped this city to continue till today particularly when other old cities on the banks of the Ganga died out. Also why did Lord Buddha select peripheral region of Varanasi Sarnath for delivering his first sermon particularly when he attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. It is on record that he was well conversant with Rajgriha Pataliputra and other places of Bihar. And since when Saivism became an integral part of the Varanasi culture. All these questions are deeply rooted in the history of this holy city which are attempted in this book on account of the archaeological findings. Ancient remains of Varanasi which were unearthed at Kashi Rajghat about four decades ago could demonstrate that this holy city was inhabited around ninth century BC and had attained status of a promising urban center by third century BC Sarnath the place of the first sermon of Gautam Buddha retains archaeological remains from the time of the Maurya King Asoka. But excavations at Aktha reveal that this settlement had greater antiquity than has been obtained at Kashi Rajghat. It also reveal the factors which helped make up of Sarnath as the first place for preaching the teachings by Lord Buddha. The first colonization of Kashi region on account of the excavated findings could be pushed back to about four/five hundred years. This bridged the gap between the antiquity ascertained by ancient texts and earlier archaeological records of Varanasi. Besides the Risipattana concept attached with Sarnath in the Buddhist literature is also corroborated by Aktha. This book adds new chapter to the early history of Varanasi city and Sarnath. 232 pp.

The followup archaeological field investigations around Chunar and Varanasi, which were carried out between the years 1990 and 1994, have uncovered the entire process of stone carving which was prevalent during the historical period in the Ganga plains. Besides archaeological investigations, ethnological surveys were also carried out. As a result of which it has been possible to reconstruct the entire stone carving process, start from quarrying of stone blocks, their transportation to the centres of utility-carving of the sculptures, the finished products-nature of carving centres- interaction between the sculpturing centres and the main religious centres etc.

She is the foster mother nurturing man and his settlements, thus, ma Ganga; it is pure and pious, for its physical properties, as well as religious status, thus is a devi (deity). The spade of archaeologists and the narrations in the scriptures reveal that the valley of Ganga was also the cradle of Indian civilization. It is therefore not surprising that Ganga valley witnessed continuous growth of human endeavours right from the Stone Age to the modern times. Ganga plain, therefore, had to be examined in historical as well as cultural perspective. This was attempted twice by Jnana-Pravaha, the Centre for Cultural Studies and Research at Varanasi. The first seminar focused on Samskrit Sahitya mein Ganga, while the recent one, Significance of Ganga in Indian Culture (2017), had wider coverage. The present volume is based on the contributions of both of these academic meetings. This book incorporates learned deliberations of scholars on three themes in literature, historical growth of the region as revealed by archaeology, and visual presentation of the river in art compositions. The early cultures of Ganga valley reveal history of development of technologies, ideologies and institutions. Eminent practising archaeologists, Dr. Bhuvan Vikrama and Ms. Sushri Mishra Vikrama, Prof. Vidula Jayaswal, Dr. B.R. Mani and Prof. Durga Basu, have outlined the historical personality of the Upper, Middle and Lower Ganga plain. The intangible manifestations of Ganga which has seeped deep in our society continue in the form of mythology and legends. Scholars per excellence, Prof. Reva Prasad Dwivedi, (late) Dr. R.C. Sharma, Prof. Yugal Kishore Misra, Prof. Gangadhar Panda and Dr. Pranati Ghoshal, record and interpret textual narrations of Vedic texts, Epics, compositions of Kalidas, and Ganga-lahari (late medieval text). The classical examples of pictorial depiction of legends related to this holy river have been discussed by (late) Rai Anand Krishna, Dr. S.S. Biswas, and young scholars, Drs. Niraj Pandey, Chandraneel Sharma and Meera Sharma. The Presidential Address by Dr. Prithvish Nag deals with the international policies regarding Ganga water, which inspite of being of utmost significance, is less addressed. In the present scenario, when there is much concern about cleaning and saving the lifeline of Indian culture river Ganga, this book would be useful to general readers as well as scholars, as it provides authentic information on the theme.

Appendix - Antiquities from surface: Ramnagar Collection in the Jnana-Pravaha Museum/Meera Sharma and Neeraj Pandey. Bibliography. Index. The book embodies results of the first multi-disciplinary study carried out on the banks of the river Ganga. The scientific information collected by geological and archaeological investigations by experts brings to light many unknown facets of the centre of Indian culture - Varanasi, and its lifeline - the river Ganga. Needless to say that Ganga and Varanasi are inseparable physically as well as culturally. The results of this study at Ramnagar also make clear the ancient settlement patterns in Varanasi. The holy landscape which grew on the crescent-shaped northern bank of Ganga geologically forms part of the Himalayan formation, while its southern bank connects the region with Deccan plateau. Interestingly, both the banks are valued accordingly. Connected with the abode of gods like Shiva, the Himalayan side is the pious landscape where the city expanded. In contrast, the opposite side, i.e. Ramnagar bank, is not recommended for dwelling as per ancient traditional norms. This bank accordingly was, and still is, sparingly under occupation. Readers may come across many such geo-physical factors, which are deep rooted in the culture of Varanasi. Besides recording the findings of the geological and archaeological investigations, this book examines roots of certain prevalent mythological stories as well. Ganga, for instance, appears prominently in a number of mythological tales and folklore of Varanasi. In the narration of Ganga-Avataran, this holy water channel is said to be diverted to Varanasi due to the penance performed by the sage king Bhagirathi. A pre-Ganga stage in Varanasi is obvious in this tale. Significantly, the pre-Ganga stage and the time from when this water channel started flowing in Varanasi, could be ascertained on account of the scientific analyses in this book.

Origin and growth of sacred landscape of Mundeshwari/Vidula Jayaswal. Bibliography. Index. Reputed to be one of the oldest living temples of the world, Mundeshwari is also the oldest temple of Nagar/North Indian style in the outskirts of Varanasi. Its significance increases further when one finds its composition to be governed by two diverse religious traditionsthe 'Elite' and the 'Adivasi'. The shrine is an example of acculturation, and is a happy blending of the Brahmanical and Adivasi religious ideologies and practices. An ancient cultural outpost of Varanasi, Mundeshwari now forms part of Bihar state. However, the customs and religious traditions followed here are those of Kashi-kshetra. It thus adds a new dimension to the cultural and religious history of Varanasi, besides demonstrating the rich heritage of Bihar province. The book not only documents the findings of epigraphic records and a large scatter of icons and fragments of shrines, which are in hundreds, but also incorporates views/interviews of the local inhabitants and the visitors, both of the adivasi and non-adivasi communities. Since the local inhabitants have always been the main custodians of this sacred landscape, ethnographic recordings add new facet to this study. The present volume brings to light all the available information on the historical, ethnographic and archival records of Mundeshwari. Together with the data which has been assimilated by experts in the field of epigraphy, art history and ethnography, its interpretation in terms of reconstruction of the religious landscape adds further value to this study. The documentation and detailed study of Mundeshwari compiled in this book would certainly be useful to the historians and researchers of cultural studies. The discussion and synthesis of the collected information from this Shiva-Shakti peetha has been weaved in a way that will provide an interesting and thought-provoking reading to the scholars.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. Extensive surveys undertaken by various investigators, have placed India on the Prehistoric map of the world as an important habitat of the Palaeolithic man. This book presents an up to date study of Palaeo-technology and incorporates important Palaeolithic collections of the Indian sub-continent with the aid of new scientific methods. The book has several distinctive features. Such a detailed study of techniques which were prevalent during the period of Prehistory has never been attempted before. Statistical methods, being employed in Europe for the last thirty years or so, have been used so extensively for the first time in this sub-continent, in connection with the study of Stone Age Cultures. Some of the conclusions arrived at by the author provide new dimensions to the study of India Prehistory. A large number of illustrations depicting the stone implements as well as the statistical data is another noteworthy feature of this book.
