This book, published in Italian and English, is entirely dedicated to the recent restoration of the Holy Stairs, the adjacent staircases and the atrium. It concludes a wide project focused on the renovation of the whole Sanctu…ary, one of the most representative complex of the Christian devotion, started years ago with the restoration of the chapels of St. Silvestro and St. Lorenzo. A first part of the work is focused on the history of the Holy Stairs, with essays. Among many others, the essays by Alessandro Zuccari and Carla Hendriks examine the origin of the frescoes and their attributions. The second part is mainly dedicated to the restoration: Paolo Violini, coordinator of the works and editor of the volume, clearly explains the initial condition and the methods used during the demanding conservative work. The photographic set is particularly rich, and so it is the graphic documentation of the interventions included at the end of the book. The tables reproduce the entire iconographic cycle of the Historia Salutis, with the stories of the Old and New Testament frescoed along the lateral and central staircases, allowing us to closely admire the delicate work of the restorers, who have brought the frescoes back to their original aspect, cleaning them out from the nineteenth-century repainting.

Folon is a confirmation of a peculiar continuing attention to the sacred, as evidenced by the series entitled About the Creation (1989-1990), which the artist dedicated to the Book of Genesis and which, unlike the other works shown, will remain in the Vatican collections after the exhibition.

The subject of this fifth supplement to the Bollettino dei Monumenti Musei e Gallerie Pontificie is the collection of textiles coming from pre-Columbian Peru, consisting of 26 finds: fabric fragments, cords and wool yarns, collected by the Swiss chemist Rodolphe Pfister. Initially… kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library, the collection became part of the Vatican Museums in 1999, but only in 2012 a systematic study of the fabrics and their classification took place. In the first part Mario Cappozzo presents the figure of Pfister and retraces the history of the collection, investigating the areas of origin, particularly the excavations and antiques markets in Egypt. Jean-François Genotte then analyzes the archival documentation, in order to outline the historical, geographical and cultural framework in which the textiles were produced. Passarini è famoso per aver ideato e inciso i rami di un'unica opera, le Nuove inventioni d'ornamenti d'architettura e d'intagli diversi utili ad argentieri, intagliatori ricamatori et altri professori delle buone arti del disegno, pubblicata a Roma nel 1698 da Domenico de' Rossi, in cui viene ampiamente illustrato il gusto per l'arredo elaborato nel secondo Seicento dai seguaci di Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Di questa opera la Vaticana possiede un rarissimo esemplare, qui per la prima volta integralmente riprodotto con il commento di Barbara Jatta, Curatore del Gabinetto delle Stampe della Biblioteca.

The book is structured in three main sections. The first is dedicated to the iconography and the historical-artistic vicissitudes of the sacred image, and presents an accurate study of the venerated image in the context of the medieval artistic-devotional tradition. The second one describes and examines in depth the restoration work itself, gathering the contributions by restorers who worked on the icon s pictorial surface and wooden support. Finally, the last section is focused on the diagnostic analysis carried out by the Cabinet of Scientific Research of the Vatican Museums and on the conservation strategies implemented to best preserve the Salus Populi Romani in complete safety. All contributions are accompanied by a rich iconographic apparatus, in which old photographs are paired with a new photographic campaign on the icon, together with graphs and tables processed by state-of-the-art software applications.
