Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. [10], 182 p., interspersed with plates. 39 cm. 119 colour lithographic plates with tissue guards. Bound in leather with gilt impressing, 5 raised bands on spine, bevelled edges to boards, all edges gilt. Corners and spine repaired. Some light wear. First published in book form in 1878, Studer's Ornithology contains over 700 species and varieties of American birds. Jacob Henry Studer was a printer, lithographer, painter and popular ornithologist active in Columbus, Ohio from the 1860s to the 1880s. A member of the American Ornithologists' Union, Studer arranged the birds in this book acording to that group's classification scheme. Known as "the poor man's Audubon," this book was the first large-format illustrated bird identification book that was affordable for most of the public. Plates were made from drawings by Theodore Jasper, a portrait painter and photographic colourist who was active from the 1840s to the 1880s. A beautiful book.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Theodore Jasper (illustrator). First Edition. Two folio (11-3/4" x 15") volumes bound in publisher's half morocco leather with matching morocco corners. The first volume illustrated with 119 lovely chromolithographs drawn and colored from nature by Theodore Jasper; the second volume with 37 tinted lithographs. One of the best, as well as one of the last, great color-illustrated ornithologies. Later editions, especially the 1903 edition, have noticeably inferior quality plates. Contents fresh, one long closed tear to a text page in the second volume. Rubbing with some splitting to the leather along the spine edge of the front cover of the first volume but covers firm. Some loss of cloth to the second volume. Very Good with clean, bright plates.
