Srinivas. The dawn of the new millennium started to shed light on the world affairs making it clear under the new brightness what many people had been arguing for long that the twenty first century was going to be an Asian century and the rise of China and India would be a major factor in this process. This would inevitably present new challenges and opportunities. At the same time as a consequence of technological changes as well as geopolitical imperatives not to talk of nuclear weapons spread military power has reached a paradoxical position of having become far more capable and effective at one level while it also appears to be less usable in traditional ways. The complexities arising of these paradoxes require continuing and deeper study and understanding of the development related defence and military power. The Asian continent is currently experiencing numerous wars and armed conflicts and competition for energy resources is accelerating while the extremist religion driven terrorism shows no sign of abating or being brought under control. Fragility of many of Asian states poses serious challenges to future peace and security. Both the rising powers China and India require a prolonged period of peace to devote their full energies to human development of their huge population and others need peace and security to progress toward a better life for their people. This requires deeper understanding of key issues affecting peace and security is Asia where defence and military factors remain the ultimate arbiters of human affairs. This volume a resource base for the professional and the general reader is the forerunner of the series of annual publication of the centre for Air Power Studies under this title which aims to fill a critical information and knowledge gap in current strategic literature dealing with military strategy defence policies and trends in military capabilities that impact countries in Asia. In particular it covers some of the important areas that affect Asian countries and the developments in Asian Countries with a focus on China India and Pakistan to provide the requisite regional balance. 280 pp.
Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. With the shift of global power from West to East, we have entered the era of an Asia-centred century. The rise of China and India, the recovery and resurgence of Russia on one side and Japan on the other, and the nature of the international order are leading to enormous changes. These transformational changes in the military, economic and political dynamics of Asia are accelerating with the passage of time. Historically, changes in the international order and equations of power among national have been almost inevitably accompanied by conflicts and wars. The challenge ahead of the international community in general and Asian countries in particular would be how to ensure that this is avoided, and competition, so necessary to shaping the future, is managed below the levels of armed conflict. This is crucial for most countries like India so that their comprehensive national development can progress without adverse developments. In order towork toward such goals, it is necessary to look at security and military-related issues as objectively as possible. This volume, a resource base for the professional and the general reader, is the sixth in the series of the annual publication of the Centre for Air Power Studies under this title, which aims to fill a critical information and knowledge gap in current strategic literature dealing with military strategy, defence politics and trends in military capabilities that impact countries in Asia. In particular, it covers some of the important areas that affect Asian countries, with a focus on China, India and Pakistan, to provide the requisite regional balance.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. 1st Edition. Pakistan has relied for more than a quarter century on its nuclear weapons to conduct its strategy against India. The militarys grand strategy has rested on maintaining the centrality of the covert war (war through terrorism) strategy. Pakistans acquisition of nuclear weapons has been rationalised as a deterrent to Indian conventional military superiority which, its Foreign Minister had once stated, hangs like the Sword of Damocles over Pakistans head. In turn, this was used as an umbrella under which to pursue a proxy war through terrorism. Nuclear weapons have been perceived as a shield to deter an Indian aggression which possibly could be prompted in response to the provocative (sustained and/or high profile) terrorism being conducted from the Pakistani soil, sponsored by the state actors. Pakistans reliance on nuclear weapons has also grown much more with its growing instability and rising threat of failure of the state.
Hardcover. Zustand: New. The Indian Air Force which was initially created as an independent military force proved to be an independent and versatile component of Indias military power in 1971 War. This book provides insightful essays and material to critically review and revalidate some of the continuing concepts and approaches to the planning and execution of military operations. This edited version delves into the national interest protection and legitimate compulsions for India to go into war. The compilation also lays out the canvass for a comparison study with the one in 1965. The analyses on military strategy of Pakistan and avenues of shortcoming in joint planning bring out important lessons in force employment. The aggressive dimensions of offensive actions by all the three Services have been well documented. The 1971 War proved the heroism, steadfastness and courage of junior leadership that, incidentally, has also been the hallmark during Kargil in 1999. Despite frequent criticisms on jointness, instances of combined resoluteness and mutual trust during 1971 War contributed immensely to the victory. Valuable lessons can be inferred from instances where objectivity in political decisions brought about judicious outcomes through demonstrable use of military power. The book also provides a few analytical horizons on the background framework of Simla Agreement and certain events in the past that could have developed a different template for history. Air power may be difficult to understand but an evaluation of the purpose, cost and expected gains as evident from various instances of history including 1971 War would bring an end to many irreconcilable and inchoate debates. This book makes for a compelling read for those in quest of understanding the competence of air power and its dominant influences to shape victory.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Just think: the last combat aircraft designed by the 74-year old HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd) with its expansive infrastructure was in the 1950s - and it was an excellent aircraft. Thirty years later an ad-hoc, interim institution called ADA (Aeronautics Development Agency) was set to design the LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) under the DRDO management. Thirty years later the aircraft has yet to enter service although the Indian Air Force has ordered 40 aircraft knowing they do not meet the qualitative requirements set in the early 1980s, leave alone the 21st century! Even the primary trainer for rookie pilots has just begun to be imported. Obviously something is wrong for a long time; and obviously it is a systemic problem. This volume sets out to historically examine and present a balanced understatement of the facts. Some of the leading experts in the profession of aerospace identify the problems. The reader is left to form his judgment and what appears an obvious solution. The Air Force is the most concerned stakeholder in the quality and quantity of military aircraft; but it seems to have been left on the sidelines in the process of to be criticised as being against indigenisation. We recognise that India is way behind the developed countries and China now, in design and development of military aviation. We dont have to go far to find the way ahead. Ninety-five percent of the Indian Navys warships and submarines are designed and manufactured in the country (tough many systems inside, like its missiles, may be acquired from the best in the world). The reason is starkly so simple that South Block itself does not notice it! Naval Head Quarters contain within its organisation under the leadership and the Chief of Naval Staff, the Directorate of Naval Design as well as the Controller of Warship Production besides the other supporting organisations like WESEE etc. Hence when the indigenous INS Delhi sailed out in the 1990s, the international community began to look at Indian Navy with new respect. Why cant similar system be established for the Army and the Air Force? Read the volume to ask your questions and mull over possible solutions.

This is the story of one man who has been the ICON of the Indian Air Force IAF for decades - but in reality it is also the history of a family called the IAF Arjan Singh joined this family in his teens when the Second World War started and rose to be the sole Marshal of the Indian Air Force the highest military rank attainable which before him only two Army Chiefs Carriappa and Sam Manekshaw had achieved At the ripe old age of 24 he commanded No 1 Squadron flying Hurricane fighters in the defence of Imphal in 1944 besieged by the Japanese where the Supreme Commander SEAC Lord Mountbatten in an unprecedented step personally awarded the DFC Distinguished Flying Cross to him on the battlefield itself for his leadership and outstanding performance in defeating the Japanese Arjan Singh had a meteoric career and led the Indian Air Force to an unequivocal victory in Pakistans War in 1965 In spite of enormous difficulties shortages internal challenges and restraints the IAF clearly dominated the Pakistan Air Force PAFJ stopping their armour offensive on 1st September in its tracks while providing near 100 per cent of the required direct offensive air support to our Army This biography by Indias leading defence expert unambiguously debunks the myths of Pakistani superiority promoted by their propaganda and our own negligence of history arid empirical evidence And it does so on the- basis of hard facts a large number of them brought to light for the first time and explains the political and operational restrictions that applied to the air operations The IAF was shooting down three Pakistani fighters for the loss of one of their own besides providing full support to our Army It was not only the Gnats that became Sabre Killers but Hunters and Mysteres shot down a large number of Sabres and Starfighters in air combat while Canberra bombers defied the PAP by providing daylight close air support to our troops Written by a well known expert and author the book tells us the story of the Air Force through the turbulent decades during which the Marshal actively served A must read volume for the professional military leaders as well as the general reader interested in Indias history defence and military performance 342 pp.

A potential competition exists between India and China, and there is also no doubt that China started the war. Highlighting the mistakes made by India rather than empirically analysing the available data can be regarded as the primary causes for the confusion that exists today. Though complete details and evidence of the developments are available and documented, few of us have attempted to draw up a pragmatic and realist analysis. The consequences of that war have yet to die down entirely and are frequently raked up with issues on recent developments which are not widely dissimilar to those of 1962. China is a complex country. To understand this rapidly progressing nation is even more difficult. There are many perceptions on this country and many of them are formed on account of some international events and China's growing assertiveness. It may be far-fetched to expect for a paradigm change in stance and motive which could give China an uncertain negotiating position. This edited volume provides the reader an excellent blend of the historical run-up to the aberration, the military developments and consequences. It is also provides useful material to understand the geographical boundary issues between India and China and developing Chinese strategies both on the political and military front.
