S. , then at Bezwada, obtained a grant of Rs. 1,000 to make excavations at Amaravati, undavalli &c. , and began work at the Tope in May 1877, which he appears to have carried on with great care and judgment, and in his Report he very correctly states that "The object to be aimed at by any person engaged in excavating these marbles should, I think, be to fix so conclusively the position of each separate stone as it lay embedded in the soil at Amaravati. The descriptive notes in this memorandum were prepared in February 1880, and are necessarily fragmentary, as being supplementary to the information in The Cave Temples of India, and chiefly intended to preserve additional notes which have either come to hand since that work was sent to the press, or which could not conveniently be wrought into it. In several cases their object is chiefly to indicate distinctly the position of each inscription.The inscriptions from the various caves have been prepared by the authors, as explained in the text. The impressions of the Kuda inscriptions taken by the Archaeological Survey in 1877-78. It is the first time that any large collection of the cave inscriptions has been made in one paper. From the abraded and fragmentary character of many of these inscriptions, it will be understood that the translations are to a certain extent only tentative. They suggest many points of interest which must be discussed elsewhere: it has been the main object to supply the materials for such discussion from the later Maurya period about B.C. 200 to the 7th century A.D. The book contains numerous plates to make it more interesting in the context of the inscriptions from the Cave-Temples of Western India. About the book:-The author reveals that as explained in the introductory chapter of this volume, it is not intended to be considered as a complete report in itself, but to afford much additional material for the study of Buddhist Cave Architecture which could not be comprised within the limits of the second part of the work on The Cave Temples, Much of the materials here supplied consists of drawings of architectural details principally from the Caves at Ajanta which hardly require description. These drawings, with the woodcuts and autotype illustrations, speak for themselves, and show what a field for artistic study is presented by such remains ancient Indian art. It may be mentioned that the Buddhist Caves at Elora and some minor groups have not been alluded to in this volume. About the book:-The author reveals that the previous volume of the Architecture of Ahmadabad took account of the principal Muhammhdan buildings erected there from the foundation of the city in A. D. 1412 to about 1520. There remained, however, several structures belonging to the latter portion of that period that were excluded from want of space, and these are taken up in the present volume, whilst the series is continued down into the 18th century. Thus, together with volume VI of the Western India Survey Reports, which dealt with the Muhammadan architecture of the districts outside Ahmadabad, this may be regarded as completing the survey of the Gujarat style of Muslim Architecture, and the three volumes together as forming a monograph on the subject. This volume has accordingly been supplied with an index to the three. But as the Muhammadan remains at Ahmadabad are so very numerous, it is only a selection of them that could be surveyed and delineated in any detail to supply some idea, however, of those that have been passed over, short descriptive accounts have been given in chapters XV and XVI of those within the city and in the suburbs respectively. These accounts or notes are based on the returns prepared for the Collector in 1886 by the Deputy-Collector, J. F. Fernandez, supplemented by personal observation and for the Lists of Remains prepared by him in 1884-85.
