In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. 110p. + 1 leaf. First edition. Title page framed by a woodcut columnar portico decorated with angels and a curved architrave, with the monogram of Hans Holbein in the upper corners. Short preface by the publisher and printer, Frobenius on the verso. Dedication and errata by Frobenius on the final unnumbered leaf, with his woodcut printer's device on the verso, topped by a tetrastich by Achilles Bocchius of Bologna. This is the first collected edition of Janus Pannonius (1434-1472). Half of the work contains the Guarino-panegyricus (1109 lines), followed by his epigrams. With this panegyric, Janus Pannonius established an eternal monument to his master, Guarino Veronese, who introduced him to the world of studia humanitatis and discovered his poetic talent. The poems are followed by letters from his youthful friend and later renowned humanist, Battista Guarino. Bound with: Schöner, Johannes: Tabulae astronomicae, quas vulgo, quia omni difficultate & obscuritate carent, resolutas vocant . . Nuremberg: apud Io. Petreium, 1536. 92 unnumbered leaves. Johannes Schöner intended his Astronomical Tables primarily for astronomers and students. Half of the leaves contain the so-called Alphonsine Tables, used to record and facilitate astronomical calculations. The laudatory preface addressed to Schöner was written by the Lutheran theologian and scholar Philipp Melanchthon, in which he re-emphasizes his commitment to and the importance of astrology, praising the continuous development of mathematics. This is the first edition; the later revised publication does not include the errata, consists of fewer leaves, and does not mention Regiomontanus on the title page. The title page bears an ink inscription: Bibliotheca Monry S. Stephani Herbipoli (Würzburg). Pasted onto the front inner board is the bookplate: Ex libris Gingerich. "Gloriam Dei Coeli Enarrant" (The heavens declare the glory of God, Psalm 19:2). This belonged to Owen Gingerich (1930-2023), the famed astronomer and historian of science. The two rare and exceptional works are bound together in a contemporary Renaissance full leather binding stitched on three raised bands (4to). The boards are richly decorated with frames, rolls, and emblems. The emblems name famous scholars and humanists: Erasmus of Rotterdam, Melanchthon, and others. A fragment of a two-color printed incunable was used in the binding process. A few leaves are slightly torn at the edges, but without loss of text. There are minor ink underlinings and short annotations in a few places. The boards are slightly soiled; otherwise in excellent condition. This volume previously appeared at the Hartung & Karl 37th Auction in 1982. The Janus Editions Despite successful efforts in classical philology during the Jagiellonian era, Janus Pannonius remained the center of Hungarian humanist interest. His cult had been rising since his death, becoming a public cause for the Hungarian humanist intelligentsia fueled by national consciousness in the early 16th century. Janus was the great predecessor: "the glory of the homeland and the nation," the national classic. Rescuing his works from "the filth of oblivion" and restoring them to their "ancient light" was considered a patriotic duty - ob Pannonum gloriam et meritum Jani. For Hungarian students in foreign humanist centers, Janus was proof that Hungarians were not "barbaric" or "uncultured," having produced such a great poet. This 1518 Basel edition, published by Joannes Frobenius (a friend of Erasmus) and edited by the Alsatian humanist Beatus Rhenanus, represents the partial culmination of these efforts. With this edition, Janus "arrived" in the German cultural sphere and achieved his European reception, becoming an established school authority.
