The Walt Whitman title comes from his poem about the imprints of life collected during childhood. Imprints are exactly what inspired Cuny Janssen…to make these photographs. The three volumes only have images. Text and colophon are printed on the cassette. For this series of photos Cuny Janssen worked in and around her own city, Amsterdam (2013- 2016). In the first two volumes of the book you can see a selection of intimate portraits, children only, and city landscapes with an emphasis on trees and parks. Each single portrait is connected to a landscape. The photographs in the third volume are made from a bigger distance and show us more of the city and the different situations in which the children are photographed. Here landscapes and (group) portraits are mixed and combined in a different way.

Cuny Janssen, the »most remarkable photographer of children in our time« (Freddy Langer), presents in her latest, three-part photo-essay of natur…e photographs as well as portraits of Amsterdam children; she shows in an inimitable way the intermediate state where naiveté is lost and gives way to knowledge. The natural images of parks and park-like neighborhoods do, surprisingly, not form a true contrast to the fantastic realism of the children`s images overall the images in the book seem like one big dream: bushes in colorful autumn colors, stern children`s faces while playing in the fields, while lazing and reading on the sofa, equipped with research equipment or at a theater performance at school. As in Janssen`s earlier works, her portraits never seem to be conceived with a particular moment in mind, but rather appear like stills, as frozen images from a movie, which will continue instantly. In this way, the artist, as ever, is able to keep distance and closeness to her and our objects in floating suspense and this, even though, as Cuny Janssen says, this book was different from her previous projects, insofar as the images are captured in her immediate environment, rather than from other worlds and cultures. »There Was a Child Went Forth« as a very high-quality photo book is the sixth volume in the ten-year collaboration between artist and publisher. - / Cuny Janssen, born 1975, lives in Amsterdam. The photographer Cuny Janssen travelled to Macedonia in the wake of the conflict…between that country and Albanian rebels over the redrawing of Macedonia's boundaries. Gerry Badger and Martin Parr note in The Photobook: A History Volume II. , "This is a subtle book about the aftermath of conflict. Along with the children's portraits on each facing page Janssen places photographs of the Macedonian landscape, so that the book can be read from either orientation. . Like the portraits the landscapes are neutral in tone, but not cold and distant. Although this is a quiet, thoughtful piece of work, it is shot through with irony. These children, united in seriousness, may - probably will - grow up hating those from a different ethnic background tainted by the prejudices of their parents. The landscapes of rock, field and forest, so lyrical and peaceful today, could be fought over once more tomorrow". [p.87].An exhibition of these photographs was held at Museum Het Vlakhof, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, between February and May 2005.
