Erstausgabe
A Very Good Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. First Edition, First Printing. A vivid 1893 First Edition account of Meiji-era Japan, written during a two-month tour with the Bishop of Exeter and richly illustrated with photographs and a folding mapone of the most engaging American-issue narratives of Japan before the modernizing surge of the 1890s. Publisher's blue cloth with red border rules and gilt vignette on front board; gilt spine titles. 8vo; xvi, 354 pages; illustrated with tissue-guarded frontispiece, photographic plates, portraits, and a folding map; index and notes. First Edition, First Printing (American Edition). Bindings tight and square; over-opened at pages 64/65 but still sound. Text clean with light, even toning and occasional spotting. Moderate handling wear; corners lightly rubbed. Overall a solid and attractive example of this uncommon American edition. Mary Jane Bickersteth accompanied her father, the Bishop of Exeter, on a two-month visit to Japan in 1891 to see her brother, the Bishop of Japan. Her resulting narrative offers one of the more engaging Western portraits of Meiji-era Japan, written at a moment of rapid modernization but still deeply shaped by traditional life. Her account blends missionary observation, cultural commentary, and descriptive travel writing, including: +++ early Western impressions of Tokyo and Kyoto +++ encounters with Japanese Christian communities +++ descriptions of rural travel, customs, and daily life +++ photographic plates documenting people and landscapes +++ a first-hand eyewitness description of the Earthquake of October 1891 Contemporary reviewers praised the book as "an admirable account" with valuable documentation of the earthquake's destruction (The Parents' Review, vol. 4, p. 743). American printings of 1893 are not common, particularly with the folding map and illustrated plates intact. SUBJECTS: Japan 1890s; Earthquake of 1891; Missionary Travel; Charles Scribner's Sons; Meiji Culture & Society; Women Travelers; Folding Maps; Photographic Travel Books, Meiji-Era Travel Literature; Missionary & Cultural History; Illustrated 19th-Century Travel.
