Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Javier Esparza received his primary degree in Theoretical Physics and in 1990 his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Zaragoza. After positions at the University of Hildesheim, the University of Edinburgh, and the Technical University of Munich, he then held professorships at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Stuttgart, and finally returned to TU Munich where he currently holds the Chair of Foundations of Software Reliability and Theoretical Computer Science.Javier is a leading researcher in concurrency theory, distributed and probabilistic systems, Petri nets, analysis of infinite-state models, and more generally formal methods for the verification of computer systems. He has coauthored over 200 publications, many of them highly influential. He coauthored the monographs Free Choice Petri Nets, and Unfoldings: A Partial Order Approach to Model Checking, and more recently the textbook Automata Theory: An Algorithmic Approach. The latter is an exampleof Javier's many activities as a teacher, he has supervised more than 20 PhD students, taught at more than 20 summer schools, and won many awards for his university teaching. Cover illustrated with a reproduction of an etching in sepia tone by Czech surrealist painter & graphic designer, Josef Liesler. Rear wrapper shows an image by Czech photographer Karel Hájek of a soldier guarding a memorial site at Lidice. On June 10, 1942 the village was completely destroyed by the members of the Ordnungspolizei and the SD (Sicherheitsdienst) in reprisal for the assassination of Deputy Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, Reinhard Heydrich on May 27, 1942. Shortly after Heydrich's funeral, Hitler ordered that any village found to have harbored his killers was to be burned to the ground and leveled entirely. All men over 16 were to be shot, women and children are to be sent to concentration camps and children which are suitable for "Germanisation" are to be placed in SS families. The Nazis chose Lidice because its residents were suspected of harboring partisans and were falsely associated by aiding team members of "Operation Anthropoid" (code name for the assassination plot). On June 10, 1942 Hitler's orders were carried out meticulously. Interior illustrated with 20 reproductions of photographs in sepia tone showing the quaint village before, during and after its destruction. Text in Czech. Very minor age wear on wraps. All pages, incl. wraps, neatly folded in half. Very good to near fine condition. Issued to commemorate the third anniversary of the massacre. Scarce.

The three years of a film journal showcasing film production in Czechoslovakia, published for an international readership in German. It features film summaries of recent releases, and hundreds of photos of actors, directors and key personalities in the industry. It includes films of the avant-garde, including work by Alexander Hackenschmied, Jan Werich, Jiri Voskovec, etc. Czech films were not distributed to Western Europe or North America, and few aficionados realize the breadth and inventiveness of the Czech film industry during the interwar years, which saw some remarkable productions. The second issue for 1937 is spelled "Der cechoslovakische Film." Rare: worldcat finds no full runs of this journal in North American libraries, with only two holding Vol. I (Getty, Univ WI). Very good to fine.
