Gybels (1928-2011) was a Belgian neurosurgeon and professor of neurology at the Catholic University of Leuven and a world authority on pain. He had been admitted to emeritus status since 1994. Gybels obtained his doctorate at KU Leuven with a thesis entitled 'Autonomous and cerebral activity in somatic stimulation: an electro-physiological study' in 1955. In the early 1960s, Gybels was a fellow at the Canadian Montréal Neurological Institute of McGill University before returning to KU Leuven in 1964, where he founded the neurophysiological laboratory a few years later. In 1970, he was appointed full professor. His field of expertise was the origin and treatment of pain. Together with William Sweet of Harvard University, he studied persistent pain. Gybels was also a pioneer in Belgium in stereotactic surgery and deep brain stimulation.…
