The composer is depicted within a decorative oval frame, half-length facing forward with head turned left. He wears a double-breasted coat, waistcoat, a bow at his neck. The frame rests on a plaque with lyre, trumpet, and laurel wreaths. 217 x 158 mm. On laid paper. Trimmed with loss of Latin verse and imprint below plaque. British Museum number 1944,1014.499 "At the time of the French Revolution Dussek fled to England. Because of his connections with the aristocracy in Paris he was unpopular with the Revolutionary regime, and like many musicians of the time he took refuge in London. He spent the next 11 years in London, where he became very popular as a piano teacher and appeared frequently in concerts, first at the Hanover Square Rooms on 1 June 1789.
