A typical record gives the soldier's name, rank, military unit, and dates of entry into the services and separation by discharge, desertion, or death. (7) Bourdieus 'soziologischer Selbstversuch' möchte, wie er in dem ersten Satz des Buches festhält keine Autobiographie sein, sondern eine ihm 'angemessen erscheinende Sicht der Dinge' (7). Eine an sich akzeptable Absicht, wenn jemand nach einer gewissen Lebenszeit den Entschluss fasst, das Erlebte schriftlich mitzuteilen, wäre Bourdieu nicht Zeitlebens jemand gewesen, der wissenschaftliche Methodik, vorgefundene gesellschaftliche Zustände, aber auch sich selber als einen Teil des zu Erforschenden ständig hinterfragt hätte. So hat er im Jahr 1986 den Artikel 'L'illusion biographique' - 'Die biografische Illusion' veröffentlicht, in welchem er Kritik äußert, dass Biografie als ein zeitlich und logisch orientierter Zusammenhang gesehen wird (vgl. Liebau 1990: 83) - verantwortlich hierfür macht Bourdieu den Eigennamen, der als Institution aus Zeit und Raum herausgenommen wird und von Veränderungen ausgeschlossen ist (vgl. Bourdieu 1986). Jedoch geht mit dieser Verwendung des Eigennamens eine extreme Abstraktion der Identität der Person einher (vgl. Liebau 1990: 86). Für Bourdieu ist statt Biografie der Begriff 'Trajectoire' - Laufbahn treffender; darunter sind Positionen zu verstehen, 'die nacheinander von demselben Akteur (oder derselben Gruppe) in einem Raum eingenommen werden, der sich selbst ständig entwickelt und der unausweichlichen Transformationen unterworfen ist' (Bourdieu 1998). Bourdieu selber ist aus einfachen Verhältnissen bis an die Spitze der Gesellschaft gelangt, ohne sich jedoch jemals selbst vollständig zu diesem Feld gehörig zu fühlen. Inwiefern die Veränderungen des Raums, und die soziologische Beschreibung dieser Veränderungen im Buch gelungen ist, wird im Rahmen dieser Rezension besprochen.Passend zur geäußerten Kritik an der klassischen Biographie, folgt Bourdieus Selbstversuch keiner Chronologischen Ordnung, sondern gliedert sich grob in drei Teile:
