Decorative Cloth. Zustand: Reading Copy. No Jacket. New Edition. Two volumes, cloth gilt 8vo, pp.xx, 394 ; xvi, 395 - 818. Bw plates, ills. Gilt depiction of Mary Magdalene and Jesus on covers. Volume 1 is extensively damp marked - the spine is worn with some rippling but the covers are both clean and bright. All text pages and plates have waterstaining to upper and lower margins, sometimes encroaching into text or plate area, and the pages are rippled and stiff as a result. However all pages and plates are present, none are sticking or otherwise damaged, although a few plate tissue guards are torn. Volume 2 has a worn spine although the titling is reasonably clear, and bright covers. However this volume escaped the damp staining altogether, and although the contents are a bit foxed and spotted in places, are otherwise clean and tight. Will price as a reading copy due to volume 1 damage. Heavy book weighing c2400g when parcelled, exceeding the postage quotation default weight of 1000g and thus incurring extra postage over the default for orders from overseas and those sent in the UK. "Pain provoked by the irritation of tissues deep to the skin has a characteristic quality and tends to be diffusely "referred". Unlike acute pain from the skin, it persists for a considerable period of time, is rather slowly transmitted to the consciousness, and is often associated with autonomic or other "reflex" concomitants, such as bradycardia, a fall in the blood pressure, nausea, and skeletal muscle spasm. Although the radiating nature of deep pain has always been of theoretical and clinical interest, it has been experimentally investigated in muscle only since Lewis and Kellgren used the method of injecting hypertonic saline. Kellgren mapped the segmental areas of deep pain and tenderness below the fourth cervical vertebra by systematically stimulating the "interspinous ligaments" of three subjects. His technique was used by Campbell and Parsons to produce referred pain from the upper cervical "somites". Inman and Saunders studied the relation of experimentally induced pain to clinical problems of deep pain and introduced the concept of "sclerotomes". These studies have received only scanty critical consideration. It also still seems to be frequently taken for granted that the segmental distribution of deep pain follows the familiar dermatomes. Little attention, moreover, has been paid to the autonomic and affective concomitants which are characteristic of pain in deep tissue. A systematic study of the patterns of pain which follow the stimulation of paravertebral and limb muscles was, therefore, carried out. The number of subjects used was larger than that investigated in Kellgren's work, and the upper cervical segments were included. In addition, observations were made on such concomitant phenomena as the autonomic repercussions and the cutaneous sensory changes in the skin overlying areas of deep pain, and on the influence of somatic and sympathetic-nerve block." The pelidnotine leaf chafers are a speciose assemblage of scarab beetles that are ecologically important as herbivores, pollinators, and habitat bioindicators. These beautiful beetles have long attracted the attention of local people, collectors, scientists, and artists. The group includes the spectacular metallic "jewel scarabs" (Chrysina species) that occur in shades of iridescent green, gold, silver, and copper. The large and brilliant green species, Chrysophora chrysochlora, is used for adornment by native Indians in South America. The extant pelidnotine leaf chafers are entirely distributed in the New World and include 26 genera and over 400 species and subspecies. New species remain to be described. This group has had a complex nomenclatural history due primarily to 20th century taxonomic and nomenclatural errors. The authors synthesise the taxonomic and biodiversity information for the pelidnotine scarabs, provide a key and overviews of all genera, a catalogue of all taxa (including synonyms, distributional data, and type specimen information), and images of 107 exemplar species. This work makes biodiversity research on pelidnotine leaf chafers tractable and accessible, thus setting the stage for studies that address evolutionary and ecological trends. Sofia, Moscow.
