Samuel Hartlib (ca. 1600-1662) was born to an English mother and Polish father, educated in Germany, who moved to England in 1628. He befriended Robert Boyle and John Milton (who dedicated his 1644 On Education to Hartlib), and entered the whirlwind of XVIIc prewar scientific and political advancement in Britain. He eventually came to be a prolific correspondent with many great minds in England and abroad. Once the Civil War came, Hartlib sensibly focused on country pursuits. The year after the present item was published, Hartlib would bring out a second edition of Sir Richard Weston's Discourse on the modes of husbandry (specifically crop rotation) that he had seen in Flanders; this is advertised in the prefatory pages. The Legacie is a series of correspondence; some addressed to Hartlib, some between Hartlib and others and one a public letter. The first has been attributed to Robert Child, one (published) was written by King James VI/I on the cultivation of silkworms, and others to Cressy Dymock. Single sheet (788 x 750 mm; written area 515 x 447 mm). Latin and English manuscript on vellum in 48 lines of textura. Illuminated borders decorated in rich colour with coats of arms and royal portraits, including James I, his wife, Anne of Denmark, and the young Charles I as Prince of Wales. Large coat of arms and archival inscriptions to dorse. King James creates and bestows the title of Viscount Lecale upon Thomas, Fourth Baron Cromwell in this strikingly large and richly illuminated letters patent. Serving the dual purpose of rewarding a loyal follower who would stand by the Crown through the Civil War, as well as entrenching the dominance of the English aristocracy in Ireland, this document adorned with royal Stuart imagery stands out as an extravagant display of wealth and power. - The portrait of James I and VI stands in the upper left corner, placing royal power as the starting-point. His motto "Posui Deum adiutorem meum" is dated 1625, indicating that the decoration was completed a year after the document itself was issued. This suggests that the illuminations were commissioned by the recipient rather than executed in the chancery, as an additional display of his resources and royal favour. - Immediately to the King's left is his son, the future Charles I, with the device of the Prince of Wales, "Ich Dien". In the centre stand the royal arms, and following these we see Queen Anne of Denmark, James's consort, and finally her nephew, Friedrich Ulrich, Duke of Brunswick, as a mounted knight. The Biblical phrases ("For our shield appertaineth to the holy one of Israel", a paraphrase of Psalm 89:18) serve to underscore the divine origins of royal power at a time when it was about to be undermined by the Civil War. - In the centre of the document stands the text of the grant, written in a fine textura hand in Latin, signed by Francis Edgeworth, Clerk of the Hanaper. The Great Seal that would once have accompanied the document is lost, with holes where it was once affixed. Along the other margins are coats of arms, including those of Sir Francis Blundell (1579-1625) and of St. John's College, Oxford. Cromwell's own arms stand in extra-large form on the dorse. - Due to his debts, Thomas Cromwell's father Edward had exchanged his estates in England for land in Ireland that had been confiscated after Tyrone's rebellion. In return for his loyal support of the Stuart monarchy, Thomas was rewarded with the title of Viscount Lecale in 1624, and in 1645 with that of Earl of Ardglass. His adherence to the royalist side in the Civil War placed him in conflict with his distant cousin, Oliver Cromwell, both of them descended from Henry VIII's famous chief minster Thomas Cromwell. - An imposing visual statement of power and loyalty to the Crown from the rise of the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. - Seal wanting, hole at the lower border in its place. Plica unfolded, with lingering impression marks from the seal cord and holes along the plica fold, without loss of text. Creased from folding, minor marginal tears, minor dust-staining, rubbing and smudging, but overall in good condition, text nearly all present aside from one small hole (c. 1.5 x 1 cm), drawings clear and elegant. - 1) Thomas Cromwell (1594-1653), First Earl of Ardglass, Fourth Baron Cromwell, First Viscount Lecale, recipient.
