Biography of a Marine Corps doctor on Iwo Jima during WWII. From the landing on Mount Suribachi to the northern tip of the island, the battle for Iwo Jima was a perilous fight against the entrenched Japanese. Originally planned as a three-day operation, the battle lasted thirty. As chief medical officer for the 3rd Battalion, 27th Marines, the author experienced the extreme horror of war. Aid stations were set up in shell-hole craters and 18-year-old litter-bearers came in a steady stream with the wounded. Illustrated (illustrator). Signed.
