Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Available for the first time since 1978, The Harlem Book of the Dead showcases James Van Der Zee's unflinching creative visionOriginally published in 1978, The Harlem Book of the Dead is a haunting and beautiful document of Black funerary traditions in Harlem, capturing the community's mourning rituals through the lens of one of the Harlem Renaissance's most celebrated photographers. The publication is the most complete record of Van Der Zee's funerary photographs, featuring over three dozen portraits by the artist, who meticulously composed the setting and the subjects before using his renowned darkroom and retouching skills to superimpose celestial figures, poetry, biblical scenes or portraits onto the images to compensate for lack of adornments, such as flowers, or to fulfill the requests of his subjects or their families. These portraits are complemented and captioned by poems from Owen Dodson and a wide-ranging interview with Van Der Zee by the sculptor and filmmaker Camille Billops, who conceptualized and edited the publication. This facsimile edition reproduces the printing and specifications of the 1978 publication. The original foreword by Toni Morrison is included, and accompanied by a newly commissioned afterword by Karla FC Holloway, author of the canonical Passed On (2001).James Van Der Zee (1886-1983) began working as a photographer in 1915, and by the following year had opened his photography studio on West 135th Street in Harlem. His images of Black New Yorkers, together with celebrities such as Langston Hughes, Joe Louis and Marcus Garvey, form an indelible corpus of images of the Harlem Renaissance.

Funeral rites and photographs from Harlem during the first half of the twentieth century. From the inside flap- "The Harlem Book of the Dead with its photographs, poems and text are more than representational reflections of mourning rites. They reveal the history of a time in Harlem, now past, when society cared for both the living and the dead, in the belief that we must preserve a standard of pride representing order high in spiritual and temporal values. There is a purging of sorrow in the very pageantry of funerals. Carelessness about death might reflect carelessness about life. The examples of ritual as presented in this volume are as universal as death - and there are Harlem's everywhere.".

Zustand: Fair. Original photograph (8" x 10"), warm-toned gelatin silver print. Signed in the negative (vertically): "NYC / VanDerZee / 1937." On verso two impressions of Van der Zee's G.G.G. Photo Studio stamp in red ink. Damage to photo emulsion near face; significant scrape on vest area, corners of the photograph worn particularly on the lower left. Formerly framed (matte line visible). With real faults as described, and priced accordingly. ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF A THOUGHTFUL, WELL-DRESSED AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN BY JAMES VAN DER ZEE, EASILY THE MOST IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE. WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO LOCATE ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THIS IMAGE. While elegant, handsome, and very distinctive, the subject of this soft-edged portrait remains unidentified as is so often the case in Van der Zee's oeuvre. Unusually, our sitter is wearing glasses and his arms are positioned on what may be a musical instrument case. Whereas the gelatin silver print is damaged, it is unquestionably by Van der Zee and was printed in his famed G.G.G. [Gaynella Greenlee Guarantee] Photo Studio at 2077 Seventh Ave (now Adam Clayton Powell Blvd) at 124th St. According to the finding aid of NYPL's Van Der Zee Photograph Collection, this was the location of the G.G.G. Studio in the 1930s. Van der Zee (1886-1983) was "a stalwart documentarian of Black life in Harlem. Assiduously committed to Harlem's striving and successful denizens over the course of 60 years, his pictures teem with possibility, their subjects shimmering with glamour. During the 1920s and '30s, when the neighborhood's intellectual, cultural, and creative life was soaring, Van Der Zee cultivated a visual vocabulary of grandeur that ultimately came to represent the Harlem Renaissance." (Oluremi C. Onabanjo, Associate Curator, Department of Photography, MoMA, 2021). "During the 1920s and 1930s, [Van der Zee] produced hundreds of photographs recording Harlem's growing middle class. Its residents entrusted the visual documentation of their weddings, funerals, celebrities, and social life to his carefully composed images. VanDerZee knew the neighborhood and its inhabitants, and shared their dreams and aspirations for self-determination and racial pride." (Smithsonian, African American Masters: Highlights from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, 2003). AN OUTSTANDING VAN DER ZEE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF WHICH NO OTHER PRINTS HAVE BEEN FOUND.

Mixed media collage featuring a trimmed photograph of Father Divine taken by James Van Der Zee mounted on a 7½" x 10" stiff board with an ocean background in pastels, various tipped-on elements (ships in the distance, wooden deck, and ship's railings) and a painted silver cardboard border in a wooden frame with a flag sticker on the outer glass. The photo of Divine has a tiny scratch, else fine in very good frame with the rear stand detached and wear on the back. Unsigned and undated. The image is a copy of a Van Der Zee photograph with text on the verso that is only partially visible: "photograph is sold for personal duplication." According to the National Portrait Gallery, Van Der Zee made this portrait in 1934. A nice folk art collage of the religious leader utilizing a portrait by the famous New York photographer.

Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Gelatin silver portrait photograph of an African-American couple. The man seated and well-dressed in an expensive-looking suit; the woman in a floral pattern dress holding a handbag and seated on the arm of the chair. Approximately 6¼" x 9". Bottom edge is slightly uneven, perhaps removed from a photographer's folder of photo album, else near fine. Stamped twice on the verso "G.G.G. Photo Studio / 2077-7th Ave., N.Y.C." Van Der Zee was rediscovered late in life when the exhibition "Harlem On My Mind" appeared at the Met in 1969. Fore the last decade of his life, assisted by a number of talented young Black photographers, Van Der Zee reproduced beautiful and technically impeccable prints from his original glass plate negatives. This particular print seems more likely to be original, bearing as it does the "G.G.G. Photo Studio / 2077-7th Ave., N.Y.C." , from which he had been evicted in 1969, largely before he was re-producing his earlier Harlem images. Not in *The World of James Van Derzee: A Visual Record of Black Americans.*.
