In den WarenkorbDark Blue Cloth Hardback. Zustand: Good-Very Good. Second Edition. 1887. Second edition. xxiv, 368pp., 7 black and white plates, including the frontispiece, a vignette title-page, folding map, and folding pedigree of John Sinclair, Esquire of Barrock. This is a hard-to-find history of Caithness, a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area of in the north of Scotland. It has a land boundary with the historic county of Sutherland to the west and is otherwise bounded by sea. The book takes the history from the 10th century up to the first half of the 19th century, with additional historical notes by Thomas Sinclair. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear on the boards and wear with a little damage to the cloth on the corner tips. The spine edges are rubbed with a split of about 1/2" on the bottom of the rear spine edge and the spine ends are bumped with some damage and loss to the cloth. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers. There is no inscription.

In den Warenkorbxxiv, 368pp, fold out map, ills 19x13, black cloth, illustrated dw Very good in slightly torn dw. Calder's original history of Caithness was published in 1861, and his second edition, of which this is a re-issue, was published in 1887 so that sections on the impact of railways and the like could be added. This reissue in 1971 was very successful, and reprinted in 1973, reflecting how Calder's study of the this beautiful and remote part of Scotland was still insightful despite being a century old. Very nice version.
