James Levine war ein US-amerikanischer Dirigent und Pianist, der als einer der bedeutendsten Operndirigenten seiner Zeit galt. Er wurde vor allem durch seine langjährige Tätigkeit als Musikdirektor der Metropolitan Opera (Met) in New York bekannt, wo er von 1976 bis 2016 tätig war.Levine gab sein Debüt an der Met 1971 und prägte über vier Jahrzehnte das musikalische Profil des Hauses. Er dirigierte mehr als 2500 Vorstellungen, darunter zahlreiche Neuinszenierungen, und arbeitete mit vielen der bedeutendsten Sänger und Musiker seiner Zeit zusammen. Levine leitete auch die Münchner Philharmoniker (19992004) und das Boston Symphony Orchestra (20042011).
