Scarce work which examines the history of ophthamology in England beginning with the time of the Roman occupation, through the Anglo-Saxon and Norman periods, the Middle Ages and to the end of the 18th century. Includes a significant section on the Chevalier Taylor, a travelling quack with a reputaion which encompassed England and most of Europe, who also exhibited a real knowledge of ophthamalic practices during a period when mainstream medical practicioners often neglected the field.
