An adventure novel for older children by this prolific writer, one which begins when Jack and a two year old baby are found adrift in a lifeboat off the coast of Maine after a ship's explosion. Jack, who has a twisted back, was the cabin boy and Louis, the baby, was the son of the ship's captain. After Farmer Pratt and his son Tom discover them on the beach, Pratt plans on taking them to the poorhouse but Jack's quick thinking and bravery lead him to escape from that fate. Jack's adventures show his strong sense of responsibility for little Louis, despite the conflict with Farmer Pratt, who is determined to return them to a life devoid of freedom. As Jack seeks shelter with Aunt Nancy, they develop a bond, but the ongoing threat from Farmer Pratt looms over them. Illustrated with a frontispiece with a tissue guard and three internal glossy plates. 286 pp. Good overall in illustrated laurel green cloth boards with gilt lettering - some fraying to the corners and ends of the spine, front hinge tape repaired, but overall a tight and clean copy (previous owner's name) Uncommon in the first edition.…

(frontispiece + 7 b&w illustrated plates) Boys' historical adventure fiction, set during the Revolutionary War. The author (1848-1912) got his first job as a journalist at age 13. His first book, which would remain his best-known work, was "Toby Tyler; or, Ten Weeks with a Circus" (1881). Wikipedia: "Following the book's success he went on to author numerous other children's books, mostly historical and adventure novels. Like most writers of his era, he was astonishingly prolific, and a total of nearly 200 books by him have been identified. Most were signed with the Otis name, but he also used the pen names Walter Morris, Lt. James K. Orton, Harry Prentice, and Amy Prentice."
