In den WarenkorbOriginal Wraps. Zustand: Poor. Two volumes, separate, in original stiff wraps with a thin cloth binding. Thess volumes appears to be whole unto themselves, labeled Part XI and XII at the upper left corner of the cover, and perhaps issued either before or separately and in conjunction with the two volume work by the same author a…nd illustrator. No bibliographic information pertaining to these particular pieces, or any publications of this work in parts, could, at the present, be found. Part XI has three full color illustrated plates, a black and white illustrated cover, a first and last blank endpaper, 6 pages of text for two of the clans, with 4 pages of text for the third. The three clans in this part are the Clann Mhoraidh-the Murrays, The Mac Donalds, and Clann Pharlain- The Mac Pharlans. In POOR/FAIR condition. All pages are loose and DETACHED within the covers. There is very heavy wear to the extremities, especially along the fore edge. The wear is moderate to heavy chipping, mostly to the lower corner, with loss of the margins in this area, resulting in a rather tattered look in this section. The rest of the extremities have relatively minor wear, nothing close to the extent of the lower corner. The covers themselves are darkened and are soiled, with some scuffing as well. Very large dampstain covering almost the entire front cover, not affecting text or plates. The number 3 in pencil with a 2 inch underline and an initial are written in at the top left corner of the front cover. The rear cover displays some foxing and heavier soiling. The text is clean but the pages are darkened, as are the illustrated plates. The colors on the plate still appear vibrant, with the darkening noticeable around the page extremities. There is also some faint paint smudges on some of the pages, which I believe to have been from the coloring of the plates themselves. Overall a FRAGILE piece, in POOR/FAIR condition, with three color plates that are still attractive and vibrant. Part XII has three full color illustrated plates, a black and white illustrated cover, 2 blank endpapers, 6 pages, 4 pages, 4 pages of text, each corresponding with the clan they describe, as well as a blank page separating each illustration from the text. This volume appears to be whole unto itself, labeled Part XII at the upper left corner of the cover, and perhaps issued either before or separately and in conjunction with the two volume work by the same author and illustrator. Three clans are detailed in this volume: the Mac Donalds of Glenco, the Camerons, and the Lamonds. In POOR/FAIR condition. All pages are loose and DETACHED within the covers. There is very heavy wear to the extremities, especially along the fore edge. The wear is heavy chipping, mostly to the lower corner, with loss of the margins in this area, resulting in a rather tattered look in this section. The rest of the extremities have relatively minor wear, nothing close to the extent of the lower corner. The covers themselves are darkened and are soiled, with some scuffing as well. The number 3 in pencil with a 2 inch underline and an initial are written in at the top left corner of the front cover. The rear cover displays some foxing and heavier soiling and a dampstain along the fore edge. This dampstain is faintly evident on the front cover and is noticeable to the pages of text within, all within the fore edge margin. Photos available upon request. R.R. McIan (illustrator).

A very good copy in a beautiful binding. "Born around 1803, [McIan] was an actor, artist and theatrical costume designer, who emerged from relative obscurity in the 1840s as an authority on Highland costumes and customs, and in the process achieved a remarkable degree of social and cultural success. The apex of his career coincided with an upsurge in enthusiasm amongst British social and cultural elites for ?a new image of the Scottish Highlands, one far removed from the realities of rural crisis and economic collapse, a fusion of blood sports and wild romance.? Along with his collaborator, James Logan, McIan contributed to this trend with their major work, 'Clans of the Scottish Highlands'. Through the then novel medium of lithography, this depicted in dramatic and romanticised fashion, costumes and tartans associated with particular Highland clans. McIan?s final major literary project was a further collaboration with James Logan. This was intended to build upon the previous success of 'Clans of the Scottish Highlands,' but was aimed at a more popular, although still affluent readership. A folio, it was a significantly smaller book and did not stretch to multiple volumes. It consists of a substantial text by Logan upon the subject of traditional lifestyles and customs to be found in the Scottish Highlands, which the author correctly asserted were being eroded by contact with cultural and technological change in the wider British world. McIan?s twenty-[four] illustrations showed groups of Highlanders taking part in past-times which a wider audience would have found ?picturesque? such as spearing salmon, fording rivers, carding wool and butchering the carcass of a stag. Rather than depictions of actual scenes drawn from life, they are in fact cultural productions with a very specific ideological intent. They were intended to show a vision of Highlanders as a people, who through their enforced remoteness were able to symbolise ideas about more authentic modes of existence." (RRMcIan dot com). HBS 69385. $4,500. MCIAN, R.R.; ACKERMANN, Rudolph (illustrator).

In London with the support of Lord Aberdeen, Logan studied at the Royal Academy. He became a journalist, and then a clerk in an architect's office. He was employed for a time by the Highland Society of London, but never settled to a career. Logan's major work was The Scottish Gael, or Celtic Manners as preserved among the Highlanders (2 vol.), published in 1831. It was based on walking tours he had made in the Scottish Highlands and islands during the previous decade, during which he collected Gaelic antiquities.Robert Ronald McIan (1803?1856), also Robert Ranald McIan, was a Scottish actor and painter. He is best known for romanticised depictions of Scottish clansmen, their battles and domestic life. He is perhaps best known for his illustrations in The Clans of The Scottish Highlands, published in 1845 on the centenary of the Jacobite Rising with text by James Logan. It proved so popular that it was reissued in 1857, after his death. His depictions of clansmen fanned the romantic revival of interest in Gaeldom that was led by Queen Victoria, to whom the book was dedicated., Size : Folio, Illustrated with superb hand-coloured lithographs depicting Scottish Figures, Displaying their Dress, Tartans, Arms, Armorial Insignia and Social OccupationsColoured armorial frontispieces, dedication leaf printed in gilt, list of subscribers, 72 finely hand-coloured aquatint plates after McIan (some heightened with gum-Arabic), a few plates with imprint shaved or cropped, 'Gordon' plate cropped affecting fishing rod in image., Volume : Two volumes., Ex-Libris of John Donaldson Craig. , References : Abbey Life 426; Colas 1892; Lipperheide 1032 A fine and handsome copy finely hand coloured plates with protective tissue.
