On the spine, title gilt to second panel. Illustrated with a pictorial lithographic title page and 36 tinted lithographic plates with English captions, and accompanying text in German. Heavy finger soiling and foxing, several leaves and plates with repaired marginal tears, one page lacking lower right corner, edges and extremities worn. Yellow endpapers with pencil owner inscription on the recto of first free endpaper and partial signature on the title page, lithographs mentioned in pencil on recto of second free endpaper. This German language version was originally issued in parts; this volume includes 36 of the original 52 lithographic plates. James W. Sheahan (1824-1883), a journalsit for the Chicago Tribune wrote the text. Publishers Otto Jevne and Peter Amini collaborated with Austrian-born illustrator Louis Kurz (1833-1921), forming the Chicago Lithographing Co. The scenes of Chicago show a lively, bustling city with impressive commerce and culture, including churches, hotels, theaters, banks, waterfront activities and an opera. It presents the best description of Chicago before the Great Fire of 1871. More than five million German immigrants came to the United States in the 1800s with people of German descent accounting for 20 percent of Chacago's population in 1860. (Keil & Jentz, German Workers in Chicago, University of Illinois Press, 1988). From the collection of William S. Reese (1955-2018), who was one of the great Americana booksellers. His firm continues to trade in New Haven. After his death, Christie's New York sold his private collection (24-25 May 2022; the present item was lot 262).
