First Edition. First U.S. edition, from the London plates. Frank Adams' large colorful illustrations for a story by James Kendrew (Kendrew's story was originally self-published in 1820 as a chapbook with small, unattributed woodcuts). Quarto red paper boards backed with red cloth (vs green for the London edition); color plate pasted to front. Boards visible at corners, front hinge starting to split and rear hinge split; otherwise about good or better. A horrifying children's story, in this cataloger's opinion, of a hunter taking pleasure in killing birds to take home to his wife who, of course, does all the rest of the work. At least they eat the birds. Scarce.…

Duodecimo pamphlet in six, pp., 12, woodblock cupid vignette to title-page. Sewn on a single thread, reinforced with glued paper to spine. Later pencil inscription to penultimate page. Nicks and a little fraying to edges; light soiling and toning; a few ink spots. A very serviceable copy. A rare nineteenth-century comical guide to courtship. The contents include a Valentines poem written backwards (with printer's errors only compounding the difficulty in reading it), followed by amorous poems designed for various people indeed including printers, bookbinders, watchmakers, carpenters, and knights of the razor. Interestingly, not all of the poems are written to be read by men, with poems 'to a solider', 'to a mechanic' etc. presumably being written for women to read to potential male suitors. Most of the poems are followed by answers. Single life in Regency York must have been difficult, as all the answers are rejections. We locate two copies world-wide at the BL and UCLA.…

'N.B. Further particulars of the Bills, will be given in a future Advertisement' (also unrecorded). Kendrew, primarily known for his chapbooks, was in business 1803-1841. William Scawin, druggist of York, 1775-1866 married Mary Bland in 1801. He traded in Low Petergate at this time, moving to 57 Petergate in 1829. He retired in 1844, moving to 11, Monkgate, his business being taken over by James Scarwin Tonge until c.1870. …

Original photograph from the 1962 Nobel Prize Ceremony signed by Francis Crick, James Watson, and Maurice Wilkins (jointly awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine) as well as Max Ferdinand Perutz and John Kendrew (jointly awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Chemistry). Also captured in the photograph is John Steinbeck, who was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature. In fine condition. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1962 was awarded jointly to Francis Harry Compton Crick, James Dewey Watson and Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material." In 1968, Watson published The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact. "He has described admirably how it feels to have that frightening and beautiful experience of making a great scientific discovery" (Richard Feynman, winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize for Physics).…
