Aportó a las Brigadas Internacionales no solo su entusiasmo sino también su conocimiento del idioma español, aprendido en su escuela cercana a Live…rpool, y sus primeros pasos como periodista y poeta antes del viaje a España. Aunque unas memorias son quizá la obra más individual que pueda concebirse, las pinceladas que va dando Jump sobre camaradas internacionales y españoles le dan al relato un carácter coral. Su actividad durante la guerra estuvo asociada sobre todo con labores lingüísticas y de oficina muy diversas, pero también estuvo en el frente, en una unidad de ametralladoras de la XV Brigada en el entorno de la batalla del Ebro, desde donde sería evacuado a varios hospitales, antes de su regreso a Londres. Aquel conflicto internacional dejó huellas indelebles en Jump, lo mismo que en tantos combatientes de ambos bandos. En su caso, venía enamorado de Cayetana, una de las jóvenes cuidadoras españolas de los niños vascos que habían salido hacia el Reino Unido tras el bombardeo de Guernica, a las que ayudó en las colonias de acogida, pero en su experiencia sobre el terreno Jump se enamoró también de España y del idioma español, que perfeccionó durante su estancia hasta el punto de que acabaría siendo profesor y lexicógrafo reconocido de esa lengua durante el resto de sus días (Penguin publicó su diccionario español-inglés el mismo año de su muerte). Gracias a sus dotes periodísticas, los capítulos del libro se pueden leer casi como relatos breves independientes, en los que muestra su fina capacidad de observación del paisaje y del paisanaje de aquella España cuya imagen en blanco y negro el autor es capaz de colorear en sus descripciones. Su sensibilidad de poeta le hace destilar los sentimientos más íntimos de sus vivencias. Algunos de los poemas intercalados en el libro son inéditos y otros habían sido publicados en algunas obras de poesía, entre otras una prologada por Antonio Buero Vallejo. El brigadista que se enamoró. Memorias de la Guerra Civil resulta de lectura instructiva a la vez que entretenida para un público lector muy amplio y variado, compuesto de personas interesadas en conocer testimonios directos de la contienda española, muy especialmente estudiantes jóvenes.
