Introduction by James J. Rorimer. Description of the Plates by Margaret B. Freeman, Curator of the Cloisters. (32 x STUNNING COLOURED ILLUMINATIONS) The Belles Heures, from which the ex-libris and thirty-two illuminations are here reproduced in facsimile, is one of the celebrated Books of Hours created in the second decade of the fifteenth century for Jean, Duke of Berry, prince of France (1340-1416). Like the well-known Tres Riches Heures, also made for the duke and now in the Musee Conde in Chantilly, it is a rich compendium of brilliant small paintings and ranks among the great masterpieces of the Middle Ages.
