Der New Yorker Philanthrop und Frankophile James Hazen Hyde trat nach seinem Studium in Harvard in die von seinem Vater gegründete Versicherung Equitable Life Assurance Society" ein, der er ab 1899 als Vizepräsident vorstand. 1905 engagierte er den Stararchitekten Stanford White, mit dessen Hilfe er einen Ball im Stile des französischen Königs Ludwig XVI. ausrichtete. Die geschätzten Gesamtkosten von 200.000 $ verursachten einen Skandal, der zu Hydes Rücktritt und Übersiedlung nach Versailles führte. Hier gründete er die Alliance Française und betätigte sich als Sammler allegorischer Druckgraphik. Nach dem Einmarsch der Nationalsozialisten übersiedelte Hyde 1941 zurück in die USA.…
