Adams Six-Guns 829, Burs 148, Dobie p. 59, Jenkins BTB 76: "This is one of the finest personal memoirs of Texas Ranger service. His memoirs were written with the edit of an unknown editor, privately printed, and sold by Gillett himself." Gillett's narrative is essential to understanding the activities of the Texas Rangers in the post-Reconstruction years, fighting first against the Comanche and then against assorted bad-men and ne'er-do-wells. Adams Six-Guns 829, Burs 148: "Though considered one of the better Ranger books, the author makes many mistakes, especially in his chapter on Sam Bass." Greene 50 Best p. 73: "Gillett joined the Rangers in 1875 at age 18, but he never succumbs to the deification process so many other writers (including Webb) stumble through when recalling those gods of the frontier.".
