Antique Pamphlet. Zustand: Fair. 8 1/8" x 5 3/4" quarto. Removed pamphlet. 34 pages, missing 2 leaves (p. 36-38) and errata. Repaired corners on last 10 leaves with considerable loss to original paper and some text. Pages lightly-tanned throughout and remarkably clean. Text sharply printed (ESTC R21875). Published anonymously, News from France provides a Protestant's account of the Catholic drama that unfolded between King Louis XIV and Pope Innocent XI. In 1682, King Louis XIV called together the Assembly of the French Clergy and put forth the "Four Articles," which asserted the King's authority over that of the Pope. In doing so, King Louis XIV solidified his absolutist power. (Wikipedia) The pamphlet has been attributed to Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury and historian known for his work, The History of the Reformation. The Letter was likely a revision of a letter from James Fall, a Scottish clergyman residing in France at the time. (ESTC R21875).
