Coming after many years of growth and stability, the period brought to office a new generation of political leaders whose task was to sustain and build upon the policies of their predecessors. It was a challenging period, punctuated by the Asian financial crisis of 1998 and the SARS epidemic in 2003. The 45 essays collected in this volume review a range of issues from domestic politics and foreign policy to economic development, society, culture, the arts and media, and assess the legacy of Goh Chok Tong's premiership.
