Sir James David Marwick (1826-1908) was a Scottish lawyer and historian, and served as Town Clerk of Glasgow for thirty-one years. He was also a prolific writer, and it was upon his initiative that the Scottish Burgh Record Society was founded. He edited a number of the society's publications, and in the present work he provides a history of the guilds and crafts of Edinburgh. It is divided into the following three parts: Laws and Customs Relating to Burgess-ship, Guilds and Crafts, Prior to the 15th Century; Burgess-ship, Guild Brotherhood and Membership of Crafts in Edinburgh, 1406-1588; and Burgess-ship, Guild Brotherhood and Membership of Crafts in Edinburgh, 1589-1872. There is also a comprehensive index. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold-stamped crest on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a name written on the half-title page. PLEASE NOTE: This is a large and fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.
