Zustand: VG-. 1st ed. xiii+400, unopened after p.89; previous owners lib.label to front pastedown, 1959-dated small sig. of 'Amary Kirkus' (?) verso front endpaper, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked; covers clean and unworn bar very tiny nicks to top spine, but 2-3 cms wide strips of fading/pigment loss down fore-edges very slightly affecting endpaper and pastedown borders, very faint nearly erased pencil inscription verso t.p. says 'Kirkus repaired label', this is odd because spine simply has gilt title and author name at top and appears as issued though no pub.imprint, cloth continuous so no relaying of spine etc. apparent. Primarily offers Bibllical, Greek and Roman History, English History, and Biographical mnemonics plus 'Memoranda Varia'. Uncommon. Author was Vicar of Elstow in Bedfordshire where John Bunyan was worn, but I made little progress in understanding his menomenic system.

Pp.viii/231, frontispiece showing the Bunyan Statue(which stands in Bedford), spotting to title page, toning to pages, gift message to half-title page. Green cloth, gilt title to spine, edges rubbed. Scarce. G+.** "John Bunyan (baptised 30 November 1628 31 August 1688) was an English writer and Baptist preacher best remembered as the author of the Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons. Bunyan came from the village of Elstow, near Bedford. He had some schooling and at the age of sixteen joined the Parliamentary army during the first stage of the English Civil War. After three years in the army he returned to Elstow and took up the trade of tinker, which he had learned from his father. He became interested in religion after his marriage, attending first the parish church and then joining the Bedford Meeting, a nonconformist group in Bedford, and becoming a preacher. After the restoration of the monarch, when the freedom of nonconformists was curtailed, Bunyan was arrested and spent the next twelve years in jail as he refused to undertake to give up preaching. During this time he wrote a spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and began work on his most famous book, The Pilgrim's Progress, which was not published until some years after his release".
