A very scarce copy of James Chelsum's volume, which attacks Edward Gibbon's account of the Christian church in his popular history of the Roman Empire. The second edition, and the first to acknowledge authorship to clergyman James Chelsum. First published anonymously in 1776.A very rare copy of this rebuttal to Edward Gibbon's account given of the growth of the Christian church in his History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, in which Chelsum critiques Gibbon's sceptical portrayal of early Church history, and similar remarks to Joseph Priestley's rationalist views.Bound in a later full crushed morocco, with renewed endpapers. Bound with the original front and rear wraps.Publisher's advertisement printed to the verso of the final leaf. From the library of English politician Rowland Hunt (1858-1943), the Lord of the Manor of Baschurch in Shropshire and Member of Parliament for Ludlow. Softcover. Zustand: Good. Rare and interesting book on the art of mezzotint (zwarte kunst prenten) making. History of the mezzotint from the invention of art till 1791. A nice insight into the opinion about printmaking in 1791.Decorated paper binding, 12°. Interior with pages with some frayes. On the titlepage the stamp "Bibliotheek Pulchri".Full title: Historie der zwartekunstprinten van de uitvinding dezer kunst af tot den tegenwoordigen tyd toe, met een bericht van de werken der vroegste kunstenaaren in dit vak. Uit het Engelsch vertaald. Haarlem, C.B. v.
