8vo. pp. xii, 467. + 20(ads). original black-stamped cloth (some fraying to spine ends, library rubberstamp on title). engraved bookplate of Frank B. Pidgeon, Omemee, by Leslie Victor Smith, dated 1946. First Edition. Elgin served as Governor of Jamaica (1842-46), Governor-General of the Canada (1847-54), and Viceroy of India (1862-63). As Governor-General of Canada Elgin was responsible for putting into effect the principle of Responsible Government. In 1849 he signed the Rebellion Losses Bill in the face of violent Tory opposition which culminated in attacks on his person and the burning of the Parliament buildings in Montreal. It was largely due to his personal diplomacy that the Reciprocity Treaty of 1854 was ratified by the United States. "In 1857, he was appointed High Commissioner and Plenipotentiary in China and the Far East to assist in the process of opening up China and Japan to Western trade. In 1860, during the Second Opium War in China, in the retaliation of the torture and execution of almost twenty European and Indian prisoners, he ordered the destruction of the Old Summer Palace in Beijing, an architectural wonder with immeasurable collections of artworks and historic antiques, inflicting invaluable loss of cultural heritage. Subsequently, he submitted the Qing Dynasty to the unequal treaty of the Convention of Peking, adding Kowloon Peninsula to the British crown colony of Hong Kong." (Wikipedia).

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. 12mo. 4 pages on Windsor Castle stationery. ELGIN, James Bruce, Ninth Earl of Elgin [1894-1899] [Viceroy of India (1894-1899)]. Autograph letter, signed "Elgin", dated March 2, [18]99, on Windsor Castle stationery, to William Murray Esq. at Athol Bank in Hamilton. 12mo. pp. 4. (horizontal fold). with envelope (stamp cut out). Elgin proceeds to thank Murray in the letter for what is assumed to be praise. He also mentions his desire to return to his place of birth in Canada. "I desire to thank the Bard for the statements he has so kindly expressed both in verse and in prose, and it will perhaps be thought not inappropriate that I do so from this place where I have been summoned to receive the honour from Her Majesty which she has been pleased to confer upon me and on which you congratulate me. It is very gratifying to see & think that some at least of my brother Canadians have watched and approved my conduct during the last five years. I may be fortunate one day to revisit the land of my birth, but I hardly think it will be in the manner you indicate.". Signed by Author(s).
