ISTANBUL CONSTANTINOPLE Memoirs Beyoglu Pera Social life. This book, written by Turkish Jewish writer, intellectual, and academic Deleon, features his translation… of the memoirs of Baroness Valentine Taskin (Verjensky), a White Russian aristocrat who immigrated to Istanbul in the 1920s. Through these memoirs, Deleon explores the social structure of Beyoglu during that period. Among the early sources the author used are the Annuaire-Almanach du Commerce (Trade Yearbook), published in 1881, and the Annuaire Orientale (Eastern Yearbook), dated 1912. Using these sources, the author identified the busiest streets of Beyoglu and meticulously uncovered the people, their professions, and addresses, one by one.
