Edition originale très rare de la première monographie complète sur le sujet, basée sur 32 observations dont deux personnelles. Reverdin étudie surtout l'histopathologie et la pathogénie de ces kystes. Il estime que ces lésions sont des kystes d'inclusion épidermique, d'origine traumatique. Cette hypothèse a été confirmée.

Jacques Louis Reverdin (1842-1929) was awarded the Amussat prize of the Academy of Medicine for this thesis in November 1872. He had reported his original observation in 1869 (experiment on a single patient, at the Necker Hospital), in Bull. Soc. Imp. Chir. Paris, but could not draw any conclusions from a single fact. Then he presented his preliminary results to the Académie des Sciences on 27 November 1871 (3 pages in-4 in the Comptes-Rendus des séances). Reverdin did not publish his full method and results until 1872. The memoir above is based on personal experiments on more than 50 patients, on physiological and histological research (carried out "with the kind guidance of Ranvier" in Claude Bernard's laboratory of experimental medicine at the Collège de France). Reverdin indicates that he was able to "repeat and multiply" his experiments, "vary them in several ways, practice them on animals, study the histological process and arrive at a certain number of interesting conclusions". He performed pellet grafts with tiny skin fragments (comprising the entire epidermis and the papillary dermis). He found that these fragments spread and formed a healing island. Reverdin states here for the first time that "the adhesion of the grafts occurs in the first place through the epidermis" and that "the epidermis acts by contact action". This procedure, which hastened healing and made it possible to treat cases that would have required amputation, had a great impact. This type of graft is still used in some leg ulcers. Reverdin published nothing further on his method after 1872.
