Recueil des planches de l'Encyclopédie consacrées à l'art du tourneur sur bois et au tour à figures, extraite du t. X des planches (1772). Il comprend 19 pp. d'explications et 87 planches gravées par Benard d'après Lucotte. Sont représentés l'atelier du tourneur, ses machines et outils, ses ouvrages. Galeries de vers principalement en marge, quelques planches roussies.

Copperplate engraving; mounted with gilt border and framed in gilt decorated wood with glass. Originally appears in J. Hawkesworth's "An Account of the Voyages undertaken by the order of his present majesty for making discoveries in the southern hemisphere, and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Cartaret and Captain Cook", London, W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1773. The tracks of Byron in the 'Dolphin' are shown right round the islands; all the coastline is completed and this is the first map of the Falkland Islands to give an almost accurate delineation. There is no Port Louis shown but Port Egmont, Jasons Islands, Eddystone Rock called White-Conduit by Sir Richard Hawkins &c. [Fordham 19]. This French printing is unrecorded in Fordham's "Falkland Islands: A bibliography of 50 examples of printed maps bearing specific reference to the Falkland Islands." Paillasson was born in 1718, son of the master writer Jean-Jacques Paillasson, who died in 1754. Anxious to enhance the prestige of calligraphy in France, he was part of several Parisian academics supporting this cause and was among those who offered, in 1763 and 1767, gifts in calligraphy to Louis XV. By 1776 he was a writer in the king's cabinet, and in 1780 he was appointed First Secretary. Paillasson died in 1789.From the collection of Frederick Ruffner (1926-2014), the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.

Graesse II, 389. - Interessante Folge von 44 Kupfertafeln aus der berühmten Encyclopedie von Denis Diderot und Jean Le Rond d'Alembert ("Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des art et des métiers.") zur Marine und Schiffsbau. - Die schönen großformatiken Tafeln zeigen prächtige Segelschiffe, ihren Bau und verschiedene Flaggen, die Tafeln im Anhang veranschaulichen die Navigation auf See. - Der franz. Kupferstecher J. R. Bénard (eig. 1731-1794) hat mindestens 1500 Tafeln für die Encyclopedie gestochen; davon zahlreiche nach Vorlagen des Mathematikers und Zeichners L.-J. Goussier (1722-1799). Goussier wurde 1747 von d'Alembert für die Encyclopédie gewonnen und die Arbeit von Handwerksbetrieben in ganz Frankreich dokumentiert. - Rücken etwas berieben, Umschlag mit geringen Randläsuren, Textteil etwas braunfleckig, wenige Tafel im rechten Rand etwas wasserfleckig, sonst gut erhaltene Folge. Sprache: französisch.

Complete section from the Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers with a total of 54 copperplate engravings (15 of which are folded, each approx. 32:42 cm, and 39 full-page plates, each approx. 31:20 cm - all engraved by J. R. Benard after drawings by L. F. Radel) and 9 pages of text. The engravings depict glass workshops, mold production, silica sand melting, glass blowing and processing, and other technological processes.
