Jacques-Gérard Milbert (1766-1840), peintre de paysages et graveur au burin, fut désigné pour faire partie de l'expédition aux Terres Australes dirigée par Baudin en compagnie de Péron et Freycinet. Son mauvais état de santé l'ayant obligé à s'arrêter à l'Île de France, il y resta deux ans et réunit pendant ce temps les matériaux de cet ouvrage. Milbert devint par la suite correspondant du Muséum d'histoire naturelle, auquel il avait fait de nombreux envois de plantes et d'animaux. Ryckebusch note que "cet ouvrage rare comporte de multiples renseignements sur l'île de France, il concerne indirectement l'île Bourbon par certains chapitres (Administration de M. de La Bourdonnaye et de M. Poivre. habitants. culture et industrie. administration, etc)". Bindings in half black glazed calf with corners, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets, circles and large gilt fleurons, burgundy calf lettering and volume-numbering labels, boards covered in paste paper with a cold-stamped garland border, light rubbing to spines and boards, bindings slightly later for the text volumes; the atlas volume in contemporary marbled paper boards, spine later and re-backed in green percaline, title label pasted to the centre of the upper board. The whole presented in a modern half bottle-green morocco slipcase, raised bands to spine, title label of the same leather pasted to the centre of the upper board. Jacques-Gérard Milbert (17661840), landscape painter and engraver, was appointed to join the expedition to the Terres Australes led by Baudin, alongside Péron and Freycinet. Forced to interrupt his journey at the Île de France on account of poor health, he remained there for two years and gathered during that time the materials for this work. Milbert subsequently became a corresponding member of the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, to which he had sent numerous botanical and zoological specimens. Two volumes octavo of text, with small folio atlas of 45 plates and charts (five folding); the text volumes in original quarter calf bindings, spines gilt with double labels, the atlas completely unbound and the loose plates contained in a matching bookform case. A significant and well-illustrated "alternative" account of a portion of the Baudin voyage to the southern lands, documenting the early stages of the voyage aboard the Géographe, but chiefly detailing life and conditions at Mauritius. Jacques-Gérard Milbert (1766-1840), French naturalist and artist, was invited by Bory de Saint Vincent to join the Baudin expedition as one of the official artists but took advantage of an illness to be left in Port Louis when the ships sailed for New Holland (several of his shipmates commented that the artist had seemed depressed and anxious about the voyage). Unlike most of the many sailors and scientists who jumped ship after the voyage's quarrelsome beginnings he seems to have gone in good faith, charged with investigating the natural history of the island in the absence of the two ships: certainly he happily returned on board the Géographe for the return voyage to France in 1804, overlapping with the arrival of Flinders at the end of 1803 and the beginning of the Englishman's long involuntary residence on the island. The fine series of illustrations includes a magnificent depiction as well as one of the most detailed charts of the harbour and township of Port Louis, a "Vue des Plaines de Wilhems" (the area where Flinders passed much of his imprisonment), and a "Vue de l'habitation de Mr. Céré aux Pamplemousses" (the Céré family was well known to Flinders, and Céré himself was the superintendent of the Gardens which are also depicted). --- Back from the voyage, Milbert wrote this companion account, a work of significance for its account of Mauritius and particularly the natural history of the region. The title-page described Milbert as director of the engravings for the "partie Historique" of the Baudin voyage account, giving his book some quasi-official status. Milbert's friend Bory de Saint Vincent also produced a book which included a description of his own truncated presence on the Baudin voyage (Voyage dans les quatres principales iles des mers d'Afrique, 1804); his account is more scientific while Milbert's gives the best notice of life on the island at the time of Baudin and Flinders. .

Set comprising two volumes of text, 8vo. 8½'' x 6'', and one volume atlas, large landscape 12¼'' x 17¾''. Recently rebound uniform matching first edition hard back binding in half speckled chestnut brown leather, raised bands, gilt lines, gilt title lettering and tools to the spines, hand sewn headbands, hand marbled sides and end papers. In 1800, Milbert embarked on Nicolas Baudin's voyage to Australia. During the voyage, Milbert and several other artists became ill, and the artists and the captain came into conflict. This caused several artists, including Milbert, to leave the voyage at Mauritius, leaving Charles-Alexandre Lesueur to produce the voyage's scientific drawings. Milbert returned to France, where in 1812 he published this series of views of Mauritius, the Cape Colony and Tenerife, comprising two octavo volumes of text, and one quarto volume of plates. Volume I xiv., 392 pp (+ 2 including errata). Volume II 390 pp (+ 1 Table) + 3 folded tables. The set we are offering has the atlas book of plates presented, not as quarto, but, very unusually as much larger landscape views. Atlas with uncut edges containing 45 tissue-guarded scenic views and fold-out maps. Oblong folio, atlas volume only (13 6/8 x 20 2/8 inches). 50 (of 54, number 1-37, 39-44, 46-48, and 53) fine lithographed plates printed on India paper and laid down, all after Milbert by Deroy, Villeneuve, A. Joly and others (plate 24 with tiny hole in the India paper just affecting plate number, a few very short marginal tears to mounts). Contemporary half tan diced calf, marbled paper boards (recased with new endpapers, extremities lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION OF THIS SUPERB SERIES OF AMERICAN VIEWS. 'The painter Milbert set out for the United States in 1815 as a correspondent of the Museum of Natural History in Paris. He remained for seven years, sending back to France almost 8000 specimens of American flora and fauna. He also brought home many sketches from which fifty-two lithographs for his book were made.' Issued in 13 parts, the lithographs include a view of New York City taken from Weahawk (plate no.1) and various rural and city views, largely of New York State but including other areas of the Northeast and of Maryland and Virginia. Indeed, their scenic panoramas, falls, rapids, and striking rock formations are so relentlessly picturesque that the eye welcomes occasional city views like that of Church Street in New York City [.]' (op. cit.).
