Joseph Jacobs (1854-1916) was an Australian-born folklorist, literary critic and historian, and a noted collector and publisher of English folklore. Th…is volume is the first of two collections of English fairy tales. The Original edition, first published in 1890, contains references to the sources and notes that are not present in this 'Popular' edition. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling and designs on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear, soiling and some staining to the boards. There is patchy fading to the boards and a water stain running down the front spine edge and on a patch of the front board. The spine ends are bumped with some damage to the cloth and there is a little loss to the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few light marks. The leaf containing pages 33 and 34 has probably been loose in the past and glued back in place as the fore edge is shortened and has creasing, chips and small pieces missing. Page 88 has a 1" tear on the top edge and the plate facing page has a vertical crease and some tears on the top edge that have been repaired on the reverse with tape. There is no inscription. John D.
