The first edition of this detailed survey of Britain"s native flora by the founder of the Linnean Society and custodian of Linnaeus"s legacy, James Edward Smith. In a contemporary half calf binding with blue painted paper boards. First edition. Complete in three volumes. A comprehensive botanical survey by the eminent English botanist James Edward Smith, documenting the native flora of Britain according to the Linnaean system. Isued in three volumes between 1800 and 1804, and represents one of the most important British botanical reference works of the period. James Edward Smith (1759-1828), founder and first President of the Linnean Society, purchased the collections and manuscripts of Carl Linnaeus in 1784, thereby helping to establish Britain as a major centre for botanical scholarship. Flora Britannica catalogues British plants, combining scientific classification with habitat observations, flowering periods, and regional distributions. The text is printed predominantly in Latin. In a contemporary half calf binding with blue painted paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in minor loss to paper and calf. Slight cracking to joints, more so to front joint of volume III. Slight rubbing to boards. Discolouration to perimeters of boards. Smudge mark to paint of front board of volume I. Bookplate of Shropshire and North Wales Natural History and Antiquarian Society to front paste down. Bookplate of Shrewsbury Public Library to front free endpaper. Pages generally bright and clean, if typically age toned with the odd spot. Small ink annotation to heads of title pages. Good. book.
