Reverend Walter Colton (May 7, 1797 - January 22, 1851) was an American clergyman and writer from Vermont who served as the first American Alcalde (mayor) of Monterey, California. He worked as an editor for newspapers in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, as a chaplain in the United States Navy and as co-publisher of California's first newspaper, The Californian, in 1846. He wrote several books about his travels to California and Europe. His book, Three years in California, is regarded as a principal description of California before the California Gold Rush. A friend of Andrew Jackson, Colton was nominated chaplain of the West India Squadron in 1831 and visited ports throughout the world. Colton worked on several newspapers in Philadelphia during the 1840s including the North American. He sailed to the Pacific in 1845. He recorded the story of that eventful voyage in his book, Deck and Port. Soon after Colton's arrival in Monterey as chaplain of the USS Congress, Commodore Robert F. Stockton appointed him the first American Alcalde of Monterey, a title he held from 1846 to 1849. He impaneled the first jury in California to assist in making decisions. In July 1846, Commodore Stockton named him alcalde of Monterey, a post to which he was elected a few months later. He remained in California until 1849, using his time to found the state's first newspaper and building its first schoolhouse. Three years in California (1850) contains Colton's memoirs of that period, including descriptions of the U.S. military occupation of California, social life and customs of Monterey, discovery of gold and firsthand impressions of the Sonora mining camp in the Southern Mines, visits to Stockton and San Jos , John Charles Fremont, the Constitutional Convention of 1849, and California missions. A distinguished member of California's high society in the period, his florid prose recounts a number of prominent social events of the period. Mrs. Wilbur was a trained historian and a writer of experience. She was a graduate of Leland Stanford, has an M.A. from the University of Southern California, and was a member of the California and Southern California Historical Societies. Her works include translations of a number of the early French and Spanish chroniclers and writings of her own, nearly all dealing with California history. Her skill in historical research and her facility in presenting a sustained historical narrative in vivid style and in a manner appealed to the general reader and the scholar alike.
