The first edition.Signed by the author to the recto to the front endpaper, 'J. Watts Russell Esq. from the Revd. J. E. Jackson'. A comprehensive history of the small parish of Grittleton in Wiltshire. The parish was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, noting the number of settlements within the parish. The Grittleton estate was then bought in 1828 by a prosperous London lawyer, Joseph Neeld, who then built the country house Grittleton House on the estate. Written by John Edward Jackson, an English cleric and antiquarian who wrote a number of other works focusing on the local area, including 'A Guide to Farleigh-Hungerford, co. Somerset', 'Maud Heath's Causey', 'History of Longleat', and more. With an essay on topographical literature by John Britton.Illustrated with a frontispiece, one coloured map, one folding plate showing the pedigree of White and Houlon, two plates, and five in-text engravings. Collated, complete. Bound in the publisher's cloth. Externally, a little worn, with bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Loss to the backstrip, with only small portion remaining. Fading a marks to cloth, with a tide mark to the front board. Front hinge is slightly tender. Bookplate remnants to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just a few spots, heavier to the front. Signed to the verso of the front free endpaper. Good Only. signed by author. book.

Jackson was a noted geologist and a founder member of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society. Goes into the celebrated story of the murder of Tom O' Ten Thousand (Tynne) at the instigation of Court Konigsmark and also possibly by mistake for The Duke of Monmouth who was perhaps the assassin's real target. Provenance: From the library of Josceline Grove, with bookplate and their typed catalogue description pasted to front endpapers.
