El franciscano Guillermo de Rubruck viajó a través del imperio mongol en 1253-55 hasta la corte del Gran Khan, en el momento de mayor expansión y fortaleza del imperio. Esta es una detallada relación del viaje y se considera la primera relación de las misiones en Asia.
